McNair elementary Herndon

Hi,

Can anyone shed some light on 3rd grade AAP class size in Mcnair elementary for school year 2015-16? Also feedback on mcnair AAP.

McNair is bursting at the seams. There may be a slight easing at the 3rd grade level as Coates Elementary is implementing LLIV starting in 3rd this year. (Adding a grade level each year). It remains to be seen how many stay at Coates, but I have overheard conversations with parents who moved from Coates to McNair who felt that the overcrowding was a out of control.

Cannot give details, but it is likely to end be between 22 to 25.

McNair is 365 students over capacity. Just seems unacceptable.

That is completely unacceptable. Any nearby schools under and/of with lliv sending ridiculous numbers to McNair?

Heard from a parent whose 4th grader attends McNair AAP that their class size last year was 36.
McNair serves as AAP center for Coates, Floris and McNair. However I know that Floris students prefer to stay in Floris LLIV and no one from there goes to McNair.
Also this fall Coates starting LLIV, Coates parents who are aware of the class size situation in McNair may prefer to stay in Coates. Hopefully that relieves the overcrowding in McNair.

They didn't get to 365 children over capacity overnight. Why does FCPS let schools get this way?

I think a big part of the issue with McNair, Coates and Floris is that the re districting that happened when Coates opened 6 years ago has become out of whack with the numbers. Floris is under enrolled, Coates is over capacity (all apartments, condos and townhouses in the boundary), and Mc Nair is way over capacity (with many apartments/condos/townhouses intheir boundary). If they redistributed kids to Floris, a lot could be alleviated. I highly suspect that many Floris parents would not be keen on taking on students from McNair or Coates.

Too bad, floris - it's time.

However, there is also supposed to be another new school built out that way. Not sure when, but it's in the pipeline.

They had to expect this when all this development started out towards the airport. They're still building, too.

Are there any other under capacity schools in the area? Until the new school is built, they need to figure something out.
