laser hair removal for dark-skinned women

I would LOVE to get rid of my upper lip hair. One dermatologist told me that I was too dark-skinned for the laser to work effectively. (I am from India). Friends have told me that there are modern lasers that work much better these days on darker-skinned folks. Does anyone - through experience or hearsay - whether this is true? Where should I go to find these wonder machines? Thank you!

I go to cultura, also i called Renu the other day . They say their lasers are safe i will try them too because they are cheaper.

A friend of mine, who is black and has a medium complexion, had extensive hair removal on the chin and chest. She looks wonderful. I will check to see what place she used (she lives in PG county) if you are interested.
