We'll be travelling to Cabo for a wedding with our toddler. Any advice on water and food safety from experienced travellers to that area (I'm thinking brushing teeth, baths, eating fruit)? My husband and I went there a couple years ago before the baby and we didn't really worry about the water or what we ate... but we both got sick! I don't really think it was from brushing our teeth with tap water, but I really don't know what it was from...
I welcome any words of wisdom! |

When I travel to developing countries, I do the following:
1) Only drink bottled water; this includes brushing teeth. 2) Eat food that has been cooked, or you can peel it. 3) No ice in drinks. |
| I agree with PP: only drink bottled water and brush your teeth with bottled water. Be careful with lettuce/salad/fresh vegetables and fruits since you do not know if they have been cleaned well and how they have been cleaned so just don't eat them at all, unless you peel them yourself as PP said like for example if you are eating a banana. |

OP, since I didn't trust fruit (that I could peel) when travelling, I packed canned fruit for DC. We adults ate it and took the chance, but at the time, I felt DC was too young to risk diarrhea in a foreign country. Dole has oranges/pears/peaches/etc. in plastic little cups. I packed these in bigger ziplocks and packed them in my checked luggage. I liked having a few food items on hand that I knew son would eat, and with which I could round out his meals.

Are you staying at a fancy hotel, resort, or condo complex? Many of them have their own water purification systems.
How old is your toddler? As with PP, for me, it would matter whether the child is at an age where diarrhea would be life-threatening. That said, the first times I went to Cabo (starting in 1991), I was very careful what I ate and drank. The past two times (2007 and 2008), I've been there with kids (7 and 3 in '07) and used the tap water with no problems. My worst case of food poisoning (other than in Egpyt) was in Nantucket, from a very fancy hotel/restaurant. |
