Beach or other recommendations within 5 hours of DC?

I have a friend visiting in late June from Albuquerque, with her 10 & 12 year old son and daughter.
In addition to touring a few days in DC, they'd like to go somewhere else, and are thinking
they'd especially like somewhere on the coast (but they're open to suggestions). I don't know anything about what beaches to
recommend, Atlantic City, Rehobeth, Virginia Beach, or go down to the Outer Banks or Nags Head?
I was just thinking Williamsburg might be a good choice, though not exactly the beach.

You all could go south and if they like amusement parks, you could stop in Doswell, VA at Kings Dominion for the day and then drive to Williamsburg and do Busch Gardens and Water Country and then do VA Beach or skip Kings Dominion. I think Va Beach is great and not as expensive as going over to Ocean City.

Williamsburg
Philadelphia
Annapolis
Catoctin Mountains (cabins for rent are fairly cheap).
Luray Caverns

Something to give the flavor of the mid-Atlantic coast.

Cape May! Having grown up in MD and gone to MD/DE beaches, I now consider the New Jersey beaches my personal favorites, and with kids that age they could also go to Wildwood which has a great boardwalk. The boardwalks are also the kind of thing you only really find in the Northeast.

They could also go to Baltimore for the day.....just a plug for my hometown The harbor is so great this time of year. Annapolis is fun and I do agree with Williamsburg, although most kids think the historical stuff is a bore. They can also see the Amish Country in Lancaster, PA.

Tubing on the Shenandoah River is always fun. Also hiking/camping out that way.

Lake Anna is only 90 min. or so south. Lots of rentals.

Beaches:
Rehobeth-huge boardwalk, lots to do.
Dewey- fun but lacking the boardwalk.
Bethany-crowded beaches b/c a bit smaller but more quiet.
LOVE the DE beaches!!!

Also, what about the local teams: Nats!!! Try to catch a game.
