Apostolic Church, Germany -- can someone tell me about this?

Anonymous
I'm looking at au pair candidates from Germany, and I've seen some candidates list "Apostolic" as their religion. Can anyone tell me what this is? I would prefer to avoid someone from a church that seeks to convert other people; or from a church that considers other religions as surely hell bound. I'd also like to avoid folks that are super-conservative socially or politically. Thanks -- just trying to find a match that will be successful on both ends.

Literal interpretation of the Bible.

They are Apostolic Pentecostals.

What does Apostolic Pentecostals mean? Was the PP correct that it means a literal interpretation of the bible? Its fairly important to us that we not hire someone who does not believe in evolution, for instance. Or that is opposed to gay rights.

OP again -- does Evangelical mean the same thing in Germany that it does here?

Somehow I think you don't know what it means here either.

Maybe not--I'm not any of these religions. Please educate me! My understanding of evangelicals is that they want to convert other people. But maybe I'm confusing them with another group.

Evangelicals are just one type of Christians --all of whom are Biblically called to evangelize.
To evangelize is to preach the good news to others. But as today's Gospel reading said, those who evangelize should shake the dust from their feet if people are not receptive. As a Catholic, I do evangelize but I don't try to convert people just let them know how my faith works for me.

Yes, this. All Christians are called to evangelize, per the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20, if you're so inclined).

I don't think that's what you're worried about though. Self-described evangelicals get a bad rap in the US because they're socially conservative, but in my experience don't try to convert people as much as any other Christians. It's just a name - but being Anglican, and knowing "evangelical Anglicans", I'm perhaps not as threatened by it.

Personally, I know a few Pentecostals and haven't had any try to convert me. I'd be much more worried about a Mormon au pair.

Apostolic means they believe that the era of apostles are still upon us. Specifically, it means they believe in signed gifts--in particular, speaking in tongues.

"The doctrine of the Apostolic Church is similar to most evangelical churches. They believe in the unity of the Godhead and the distinctions between the members of the Trinity. Regarding salvation, they teach the need for conviction of sin, repentance, restitution, and confession for salvation. Like most churches within the Methodist tradition, they teach the possibility of a believer falling from grace. Where they differ from many evangelicals is in the Pentecostal teaching of tongues as a sign of Holy Spirit baptism and in their teaching that the ministry of apostles and prophets should never cease in the Church Age.

If you don't want someone who believes their church teaches the truth, then keep looking.

PP here. By "truth" I mean someone who believes non-Christians are condemned to hell.

That's kind of a basic of Christianity.

It does seem OP would do better with someone who lists their faith and "none" though.

No. I'm German, in German it's "evangelisch", which people often literally translate into the English "evangelical". It's a very common mistake/ misconception.

But the actual translation would be "protestant".

Is she Armenian? She could be Armenian Apostolic.
