How does a condom break?

Anonymous
This has never happened to me and I'm curious. My DH and I use them now because I've been to lazy to see the OBGYN. I know it happens, but I just don't see how.

I used to break them all the time as a teenager before I realized I needed the XL.

#humblebrag (but it's true)

Easy to break if you don't pinch the tip...

I think some people say break when they mean that the condom slid off. It can happen with erection loss after ejaculation.

Putting it on improperly, accidentally nicking it when you tear open the package, exposing it to prolonged heat that weakens the latex (my college RA used to store the dorm condom supply on top of her radiator), etc.

Where did you go to college? Just curious. I can't imagine our RA having a dorm supply of condoms, but I graduated in the dark ages.

I'm not PP, but my dorm had condoms in the vending machines, in addition to boxes in the RA's room. Tufts in the early 90's.

Stuff breaks. But yes, pinching the tip is important. Making sure it is within date and stored properly is important. Knowing nothing is perfect and anything can break is important.

If the woman has a small/tight vagina, when the man is pulling out the latex can rip more easily from the pressure -- this is simple physics. So more incidence of ripping when a woman is first having sex and the man is less experienced with the condom.

If your vagina has teeth maybe it rips when it's being pulled out

Wouldn't it make more sense for it to happen on penetration

Sometimes it will rupture near the bottom or the top- I think it's often a sign of it being old or improperly stored in those cases. I've had one break audibly, but the other couple of times it was silent.
Definitely wasn't a frequent occurrence.

Once I figured out how to use the damn things, like by age 20, not a single break. DW and I used this for many many years before my vasectomy.

Maybe you have a really tight vag. If so, congratulations.
