trip to Europe in fall with kids

Hi all, i have a business trip to Berlin first week of October and will take my family. Was thinking of doing a trip south via the train, then flying back out of another city toward home. Any tips and suggestions for where we should go? We would spend about 10 days. The weather is not the best but the fact that it's business for me makes it less expensive and we feel like making a trip. Kids are 2 and 6.

Should also say the kids are used to traveling and pretty good on trips, so while kid friendly is nice, it doesn't have to be disney-fied.

October is a great time to go to Germany.

I'm partial to the Alps. Maybe fly out of Munich? Take an overnight trip to Berchtesgaden or Garmisch. Berchtesgaden has a Salt mine tour which is kind of fun and you could go to the Eagle's Nest. Also, take a ride on Lake Konigsee.

Or, you could go to Nuremberg by train. Then, to Bamberg or Wurzburg--then to Frankfort and fly from there. You could also take the train directly to Frankfort and go over to the Rhine and take a boat trip to the villages around Rudesheim.

October is a great time for wine fests, too. While Octoberfest is in September, the little fests in the smaller towns are really fun.

We just got back from 10 days in and around Krakow, Poland with our toddler DD. It was awesome. Krakow might be a bit of a trip from Berlin, so I would suggest the Bavaria region of Germany. The kids would love the castles, especially your 6 yo. Most places aren't easy to get to without a car though, but it's definitely worth the trip.

I would also suggest Vienna, Austria if you are looking for a trip that would end at a good location with an international airport. The city is beautiful and the airport is one of the easiest I've dealt with. If you decide to do that, then Prague is right on the way by train. I think your challenge will be to narrow down your choices have fun OP!

Berlin is absolutely one of my favorite cities in the world. You'd do well to spend some time there outside of your work.

Definitely take some time around Berlin. There's lots to see. If you do want to visit another city and fly back from there, Munich is a great choice. If you opt to drive from Berlin, you can hit Leipzig, Potsdam and/or Nuremberg along the way, but flying or taking the train will get you there more quickly.
