Yorktown vs. W-L High School in Arlington

Looking at homes districted for Yorktown, but is W-L as bad as the 5 Great Schools rating indicates? What is the trend there?

Also, is there a chance the high school lines could be redistricted?

No, W-L is not a bad school. We live in the Yorktown district, have one child there, but our younger child may go to W-L for the IB program. I wouldn't reject a house just because it's districted for W-L.

WL is not as good as yorktown. You will get the boosters who will push WL but everyone knows better.

The Yorktown/W-L boundary will likely change within the next few years when the new middle school opens in order to adjust feeder patterns and accommodate growth. N Arlington will then have three middle schools as opposed to the current two. Both high schools are good, so I wouldn't worry about any potential redistricting affecting your home value negatively. Homes are equally expensive in the N Arlington neighborhoods on either side of the W-L/Yorktown boundary.

W-L has excellent college placement and SAT scores, and the school has solid support from the neighborhoods zoned to it. SOL/standardized test scores are generally above average, but one of the subgroups falls below average bringing down the Greatschools number. On other sites based on standardized tests, like US News and Schooldigger W-L has a better ranking. Scores are actually just below Yorktown's on Reading and Math. Overall, Yorktown ranks 12th in the state and W-L 20th based on the US News ranking.

In terms of trends, the subjective reviews on Niche might be helpful.

I wouldn't worry.

Niche is a garbage review site. It uses surveys from parents.

Your affluent kid with educated parents will do equally well in both.

This. Except in the very worst of schools, kids who come from homes where the parents value education will do fine anywhere. There is no need to be at the very "best" or highest ranked school to get a good education.

Peer pressure and drugs are worse at Yorktown, so there's that.

Move a little further north and send your kid to McLean HS. You'll still have a great commute.

What does that really even mean? There's less peer pressure at W-L because the kids who bring the test scores down there offer an alternative peer group to the wealthier kids at W-L? I thought the IB program at W-L was supposed to be a pressure cooker.

I'd go with Yorktown, hands down, over W-L. And whoever said U.S. News rates W-L higher than Yorktown has it backwards.

+1

The $1.5-3 million+ neighborhoods in 22201 all go to W-L. Nobody does private.
