This question is for anyone who has recently been through a basement renovation in Fairfax County.
We are renovating our basement and are almost ready for our first inspection. In addition to the renovated area, we have an unfinished area and a small finished room (finished circa 1978 based off the paneling. That room is currently packed with storage items. The unfinished room is the pass through room to access the unfinished basement, so the inspector will most likely go into the room. Do we need to move stuff away from the walls in that room so he can see outlets, etc? Or will he not even look at it since it is "finished"? Other than indicating a finished storage room on the plans, there is no work being done on this room. There is really no place to put the stuff and if we move it away from the walls the pathway will be tiny. I am trying to build my to do list for the next couple weeks and trying to decide if cleaning that room needs to be on my list. Any other insight you can provide will be helpful. |
Assume the inspector will inspect everything. It's also a bad idea to have an unfinished space lead into a finished space. |

I wrote that backwards. The 1970s finished room is the pass through into the unfinished area, as in stairs, paneled finished area with storage shelves, then door into unfinished area in one direction and second door to new finished area in the other direction. We are not touching the paneled/shelf area. Has anyone gone through the fc inspection process who can provide some insight? Thanks! |
