We are looking at houses in the Chesterbrook area of Mclean and also in the Broyhills Langley neighborhood. The latter is in the Langley school district which I believe is more desirable than the Mclean school district. However, the Chesterbrook area seems more kid friendly. Would love to hear your opinions.

We live in the Chesterbrook neighborhood and love it. Although we send our kids to a private school, many of our neighbors send their kids to Chesterbrook Elem. and seem to be pleased with it.
The neighborhood has lots of kids and it is so easy to get into DC or onto the GW Parkway/Beltway. |
I can't speak to the Broyills Langley neighborhood but Chesterbrook is fantastic. Very walkable, lots of families, the pool is a fantastic place to meet people and the elementary school is great. Langley HS does rank higher on the top 100 schools in the nation, but Mclean HS is on the list too so it's not like your child would be destined for trade school. Really, you can't go wrong education-wise in either neighborhood, I just see alot more activity in the Chesterbrook area.
We have lived in both. I prefer our old house in the Chesterbrook area, hands down. The people, I suppose. More trees and sidewalks, too. What a concept.
We're in a Langley HS neighborhood, but McLean HS is a top-notch, well-regarded school (regardless of where it is "ranked" on a list).
Thanks for all the input. We decided not to go with the Broyhills Langley house. It just didn't have the neighborhood feel I wanted. Back to househunting again!
I have friends who grew up here and they look on the Langley alum with disdain as if they were spoiled. But I did not go to HS here. It strikes me as funny. We're actually thinking of MD, for unrelated reasons. Best wishes!
Chesterbrook Woods is beautful and I have met a lot of nice people though playgroups.. Have you also checked out Franklin Park--this is where I live and it is very similiar to Chesterbrook Woods so it might give you some more options (only a few miles apart). Regarding schools--I think all the public schools in this area are good so I wouldn't worry. Welcome!
Thanks, Franklin Park is beautiful but it seems very difficult to find houses in the 750K range there.
I too am looking in these areas, and I am just learning about different neighborhoods- what I am looking for is a family-friendly neighborhood. I have 2 kids under the age of 2 and would love to be in a neighborhood with a playground or park we could walk to. Could someone explain the difference in Chesterbrook, Chesterbrook Farms and Chesterbrook Woods and any input on schools- Kent vs. Chesterbrook ES. Thanks!
Gosh I thought the prices in Franklin Park and Chesterbrook Woods were comparable. Chesterbrook Woods is more woody than Chesterbrook Farms--both beautiful but I think there is more diversity in the housing types in Chesterbrook Woods--Chesterbrook Farms are more straight Brick..again nice but you will see stone, brick as well as different kinds of achitecture in Chesterbrook Woods. Kent Gardens is known for it's immersion program and I think it is supposed to be a big deal. Chesterbrook elementary doesn't have that but does have a great reputation. St. John's the Catholic school is supposed to also be pretty special and has recently won some kind of big award.
The Franklin Park neighborhood has no sidewalks, and has narrow/curvy streets, making it difficult to go for walks with children. Just something to keep in mind.

We live in Franklin Park and absolutely love it. The lack of sidewalks is a bit of a pain, but there are still lots of kids roaming around. On snow days, our kids just travel from house to house playing in the neighborhood -- similar to what we did when I was a kid.
Finding a house here for $750,000 though is pretty much impossible. Maybe an older house that hasn't been renovated would be in that range. The tear-downs around here typically go for that much. Good luck! |
I forgot to mention that there is a neighborhood group called "Franklin Frolickers" that gets together for parties, cookouts, etc. There is also an active moms' group too.
what is the website for the moms group-I am new to Franklin Park and would love to get involved.
