We moved into our Rockville home two years ago. The kitchen is large but very brown (brown cabinets, brown marbled granite countertops, brown and white tile backsplash). I've been thinking about having the cabinets painted white. Then the brown counters and tile wouldn't bother me. But my parents considered doing this in their kitchen and found the cost to be almost the same as replacing all the cabinets. Is that true? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks. |
We had high quality oak cabinets that were stained a medium shade of brown. We had them lightly sanded and then painted in a medium dark color latex semi gloss. The result was great but the cabinets did not look 'new'. They have a country look to them but look very fresh and updated. It was several hundred dollars since it was an easy job. |
There was just an article in Consumer reports which said to expect to pay $50 / door for repainting. We recently had our repainted, I think we paid less, but it's hard to tell bc the painter did a number of jobs in our house and charged me separately for labor and paint. I'm super happy with the result. Make sure they de-grease and sand before painting.
We repainted our bc we were getting ready to sell. I'm going to repaint the cabinets in the house we are moving into to hold us over until we can do a bigger remodel in the years to come. |
I am repainting mine by myself using the Cabinet Transformation product from Home Depot. It will probably cost about $500 (to include the kits, new hinges and new drawer pulls). Neighbors with the same kitchen were quoted $2900 by a company. New cabinets would be $10k at a bare minimum. The painting takes forever but the finished product is looking great. |
Op here. Thanks for the comments. I'm definitely interested in a new look, not just a repainted look. I had no idea thisis something I could do myself. However, I've never tried something like this and would hate to screw it up. |
It is easy to do. Our estimate was $1500. |
My mom did the cabinet transformation kit in her bathroom, and the results were impressive. She went from 1980s honey brown to dark--almost an espresso color. I don't have an experience going dark to light.
She said it wasn't hard, but it took some time (it was a long weekend task). |
We have a smallish kitchen and it was $800 additional when we were having the rest of the house painted. Not sure if we got a discount since we were having so much down.
I have painted my own cabinets in the past, and they looked great and held up very very well (Sherwin Williams ProClassic is key), but for $800... SO WORTH IT to outsource. I don't think I"d tackle that project again. |
We have a large kitchen including an island. It was 9K to have the oak cabinets painted white. this included the wooden part of the island. We did oil prime and spray versus brush. No regrets. It's like having a new kitchen. |
Also did the rustoleum cabinet transformation system. No sanding involved, and the outcome was AMAZING. We ended up doing the dark kona color, and it was stunning. Recently sold that house and the kitchen basically sold that house for us! You can do this on your own. |
Wow, thanks for the info! I had no idea this was a project people (other than Bob Vila) tackled on their own. Maybe I will get a quote and then see about tackling it myself. |
Do a quick Google or Pinterest search on the rustoluem system - lots of people have tried it with great results. I've pined it myself for that day I can finally get around to doing it! |
Do they repaint inside the cabinets as well? I mean where the shelves are? |
