2nd trimester pressure- is this normal

Anonymous
This may be way too much information. I am 14 weeks and starting today I started having pressure between my legs it feels like in my vagina. Not painful, but definitely noticable. I wanted to see if anyone else exprienced similar feelings. I do not have any bleeding and my discharge is normal.

Not sure what you mean about pain in your vagina. I have pain that comes and goes in my lower abdomen on the sides (especially left side) and my doc said it was the ligaments stretching b/c my uterus is expanding. Not sure if that would apply to you.

I often felt "pressure" around the end of my first trimester, beginning of my second. Not pain, just pressure, but enough that I would sit down until it went away if we were out walking. I mentioned it to my doctor a couple times (a couple different docs) and they said it's completely normal, nothing to worry about. As I got further into the second trimester, and the baby started moving, I realized that the "pressure" I was feeling was probably just the baby -- early on, they are very low and the weight of them is a little unfamiliar. Eventually you get used to it, although it's still uncomfortable when he decides to hang out real low down there. I can only imagine what it will be like when he "drops."

Definitely mention it at your next doctor's appt, but I bet they tell you it's perfectly normal.

OP: I will ask my doctor the next time I go in. It really just feels like extra weight. I hate to call my doctor with every new twitch and pain. I have had a couple of ligament pains but those are usually on one side or the other. This is right in the middle between my legs and lasts about 2 minutes.

OP, if you want to call your Dr., go ahead and do it, that's what they are here for.

It could be that the baby is putting pressure on same of the blood vessels (which, by the way, are pumping more volume) and you just feel it in the vag. area (which is sensitive to begin with). However, if you're only 14 weeks, I am not sure the baby is heavy enough to be felt in this manner.

FWIW, I feel (felt) sorta a throbbing sensation. It's hard to describe. It happens on occassion, not enough to worry me, but enough to make me wonder.

There was a post not too long ago about tingling in the area. You can search the archives if you think it might help.

I'm almost 14 weeks and I'm definitely having different sensations down there than a few weeks ago. The constant cramping of weeks 6-10 is more crampy and twingy every now and then with odd pressure here and there too. I've just taken it to be stretching of my uterus and other assorted things 'down there'. I plan to mention it to my doctor next week but I feel like unless its constant or localized, with bleeding, its just your body adjusting.

I also went to reach for the bedside lamp last night and felt like my abs were going to pop - things just feel 'tighter'.

OP, I didn't read all of the responses, so someone might have already responded with the answer you need. First, I would ask your OB, because his reassurance is worth more than ours. That said, I had the exact same thing. I was very concerned because it felt like pressure on the inside of my vagina. I thought it could be a prolapse of some kind (bladder, rectal -- ugh!) or my cervis dilating, or something else altogether. I did ask my doctor, and he asked me to describe it in greater detail and after hearing, he said it's very common -- the feeling of pressure on your cervix is because you actually DO have pressure on your cervix. Baby, amniotic sac, and fluids are getting heavier yet your uterus is still small enough to fit inside your pelvic cradle, so you feel the pressure.

as an aside, he also told me that round ligament pain can also present women with a feeling like something is tugging or pulling on their labia. He said this is from everything being drawn up -- it is all connected. This never happened to me, but I thought I'd include it here.

In other words, please do mention it to your doctor, but in the meantime I would take some reassurance from this. For me, it happened around the same time you're experiencing it, and really only lasted 3 or so weeks until the uterus was too big to droop down onto the cervix anymore. Doc said it would probably come back at end of third trimester when the baby drops.

good luck!

PP here. obviously the uterus / cervix are interrelated, so I've probably misstaed some of that. But the idea is that once the uterus gets too big, you don't have the same pressure feeling in your vagina or on what feels like it is the cervix. AT least, I did not.

I can't tell you how grateful I am that I found this site with your feedback. I was so worried that something was wrong, but now I feel better knowing that the pressure I'm feeling is probably a normal symptom of being almost 20 weeks pregnant.

Thank you!

I have this exact feeling esp. after I've been on my feet for awhile. I didn't have it in my 1st pregnancy at all, so when I started feeling it in my 2nd pregnancy, I was concerned enough to call the doctor, who confirmed it was totally normal and nothing to worry about. For me it started around 17-18 weeks, and now at 34 weeks, still happens on occasion. I've had several ultrasounds and all is well.

I had the same thing within maybe a 3-4 week period. It went away by the 3rd trimester. It felt kind of like a seering pain, although I wouldn't exactly call it painful. I don't think I mentioned it to my doctor, but another friend of mine had it when she was pregnant, so I didn't overly worry about it. Everything turned out fine with me.

I too have been having pressure... first thought it was uterine but then over the weekend I started to wonder if it was my bladder -- an infection I didn't know about. Went in for an appointment today and the doctor told me that it could be from a fibroid tumor they found. I also tested positive for step B and he said that could be causing the feeling as well. (I am allergic to penicillin so the only remedy is to drink tons of water and keep an eye on it.) Just some things for you to consider....
