| worried, how do I find an in home therapist? in NOVA for speech? |
| What issues does he have that aren't progressing? |
| You aren't giving enough information. Very few therapists come the house. Sometimes progress is not immediate. |
| op here no speech still the same after 5 years has great receptive language though |
Does your child have apraxia? |
I am beginning to believe so |
|
Does he have access to Augmentative Communication (AAC)? Expressive language is so important for cognitive development, and reading development when he gets to school. AAC would help him stay on track with those goals while his verbal speech develops.
Does he have an IEP? What is your plan for Kindergarten? |
Try asking in the Washington, DC Walk for Apraxia group on facebook. Or try the Apraxia Kids group on facebook. Both are very helpful! My son has resolved apraxia and the key is a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment. You will definitely want a therapist who is very specialized as regular articulation therapy is not an effective treatment. My son had almost daily therapy in the early stages of treatment. |
op here thanks I appreciate the response, I will ask the fb group |
| Is your child in speech therapy now at all? Have they had an evaluation? Are they in school? |
| Does your child have any other issues going on? Have you seen a developmental pediatrician? I only ask because we spent 2 years in speech therapy and my son was still non-verbal. He has other issues going on but ABA and OT have helped tremendously. If speech is the only issue though ABA would probably not be appropriate for you... OT, one who knows how to work the muscles in the mouth, may be helpful. |

No speech at all at 5? What does his developmental pediatrician say? Your child should have a complete evaluation at Kennedy or Children's. |

My DD had apraxia. She had speech therapy 4x a week for 3.5 years. You have to fully committ, in my experience, to therapy. We never went on vacation and she only missed a session if she had a fever. We did homework everyday. It is a serious speech disorder.
Discuss with your SLP why he isn't making progress. I am shocked your SLP hasn't brought it up. |
You need to get your child a global evaluation with a developmental pediatrician. What does your child's pediatrician say? Unbelievable that you are guessing at why your child does not talk when he is 5 yrs old. What are you planning to do for K? |
No need to criticize; OP has been working with a speech therapist and is clearly looking past it to the next step. Jeez. |
