Eaton - what's the scoop?

Anonymous
Hello, could current or recent Eaton parents reply with the good and not so good about Eaton - with repsect to community, teachers, admin, acadamics, music, art the whole thing? Do most children go through public after Eaton or go private. What is K like - my DC would be entering K. TIA!

I know lots of folks who go to attend and have heard great things! My son will likely attend in the fall for pre-k. They have a really striong school community and have applied to be a DCPS World Cultures school. They offer Chinese and Ballet and have over 23 languages spoken at the school-a huge international/embassy population. I know the playground will be redone in 2010 and they have a great princial and staff that really create a friendly warm atmosphere for all the chidren. Academically Eaton always meets AYP and the after care program is stellar--run by a non profit JEAP.

I do not have such a positive opinion of the after-care at Eaton. Twice I have gone to pick up a friend's child from after-care there and it has taken 20 minutes or more to FIND her. The people in charge were indifferent, at best, and it seemed like pretty much of a free-for-all to me.

I pick up at Eaton aftercare once a week. I'd say it's fairly chaotic, and the indoor space is pretty dark and dingy--at least the area where the kids sign in and drop off their stuff. Also, there's no green space on the playground. But on the positive side, I was really impressed by the kindergarten teachers when I toured, and they seem to have a very committed parent community. Definitely visit the school.

I can't comment on the aftercare but we are parents of an Eaton pre-K'er and have been extremely happy with the school this year. The principal is wonderful and my child's teacher is excellent. There is true diversity in the classroom - not the manufactured sort common at some schools. The other big advantage is that the pre-K through 3rd grade is pretty much separate from the rest of the school which is a big help for the young students. You'll love Eaton!

I have 2 at Eaton and we have been very happy there. The principal is fairly new and quite good and we have been especially pleased with the teachers. Yes, the aftercare may seem chaotic, but kids love it. We plan to continue with DCPS through middle and high school.
