Well, there's machine made, hand made, natural fiber ...a 10x 14 rug might cost $500 to $200,000 depending on its construction, quality and history. I would start with a budget and style and go from there. Machine made synthetics and the Seagrass type rugs are going to be the cheapest. Hand made gets pricey. Rugs are everywhere online, just look for a good return policy because you usually need to see it in the room before you're sure it works. Some of the oldest rugs are the most expensive so when to get rid of it is totally personal. I keep cheap rugs until I redecorate and I'll keep expensive rugs forever. We've bought every from remnants to Persian heirloom and in between. If you're looking for Persian rugs, there are lots of great stores in DC and Alexandria. If you're looking for something cheaper or more contemporary try rugs.com, overstock and pottery barn. Restoration hardware has nice rugs but they're not at all cheap.
