When did people start calling it "kinder"?

Anonymous
Granted I've just returned to the area after a few years away but seriously, when did people start referring to kindergarten as "kinder"? I see it on here and I've also heard people I know in real life use it as well.

Am I the only one who finds it totally annoying?

only marginally better than calling it kindy, also a new thingy

FWIW, both kinda and kindy are big overseas, in England, Australia and Canada

Maybe around the time we all became too busy to type out "you"?

It is, like, totally annoying.

There's almost zero "garten" left in kindergarten. The only thing that's the same about the old "kindergarten" and the new "kinder' is, well, the "kinder" are still there.

In India and other Asian countries they call it KG. That sounds wayyy better than kindy or kinder, any day.

To which "circles" does this new lingo apply? We still call it kindergarten. I haven't heard of kinder. Maybe I'm out of touch?

same PP

I'm assuming it's pronounced with a short i and not a long i?

I heard it eight years ago when my child was in kinder. It annoyed me, too.
But just wait! There are more usage changes to come.
My biggest bugaboo is kids using the word "sucks" all the time. Even teachers use it!
It was once vulgar, not anymore. Kinder's nothing next to this!

I've only seen kindy and kinder written on educational/schools discussion forums.

In person, people I know still say kindergarten. Or, "school."

I have a good friend who used it recently in conversation. She's one of these MONA moms and really involved in lots of stuff and I'm guessing she didn't come up with it on her own.

PP - it horrifies me to know that "sucks" is used by teachers - ugh.
