Frozen treat recipes?

Anonymous
I just walked my dog at lunchtime today and was thinking I'd love to make some frozen treats in our ice cube tray for him. He's a big young German Shepherd so with his double coat, he's pretty hot after our long walks/runs.

Any good recipes out there? He has a super sensitive stomach so we typically only feed him Origen whole pray diet kibble, and a few high-quality treats with limited ingredients (E.g. dried chicken or turkey). I sometimes give him a baby carrot or apple slice after walks during the summer, but would love some other options on extra hot days.

TIA!

OP here--that sounds good! I may have to go light on the broth and chicken pieces though--when he's been sick before even the bland chicken and rice diet used to give him diarrhea. But maybe I can try cutting it with a lot of water and see how it goes. Thx!

OP--I obviously meant whole prey, not pray above--darn voice recognition! My shepherd's not very religious, lol.

OP, I also have a German Shepherd. I don't have any recommendations for treats (we just put ice cubes in his water dish and he likes to fish them out and chew on them), but I did want to chime in and say that you might want to limit the time you spend outside in the midday heat with him. Especially if you are walking on hot pavement - it's like walking barefoot for them since they have no protection other than their paw pads.

Pure canned pumpkin is good for sensitive stomachs and could be frozen.

I put things in kongs and freeze them for my lab, such as no fat plain yogurt, pumpkin, applesauce and her dry dog food. She loves them and she has to work for her meal.

Homemade Frosty paws: a tub of plain yogurt, couple of mashed bananas and a dollop of peanut butter. Freeze in small portions.

Yes, we fill up hollow bones with pb and freeze them in a separate bag for a good workout on a hot day. Can your dog eat PB?

You can also fill a Kong with frozen treats. to keep your pup occupied for a while.

Yes, we definitely do ice cubes on occasion. My husband or I only run with him on occasion, and if we do, it's during his long morning walk when it's not as hot. But yes, a good reminder to try to stay in the shade and on the grass, which we did today. He needs a lot of exercise--we do up to two hours total per day usually--but the hot sun really wears him out.

OP here. Thanks for the suggestions, all! May try the Frosty Paws recipe with my 3yo this weekend!

I fill a cup with water or broth, and add chunks of berries and frozen mango and hot dogs. Freeze. Then I take it out of the cup and let our dog go at it. It's kind of like a Kong, it takes him a while to lick and gnaw at it to get the good stuff. He loves it!!

PP here. You could definitely add apple and carrot to the popsicle, since you know he tolerates them.

OP here. That is a good suggestion--freezing foods that I already know he'll tolerate. Haven't had a chance to try any recipes yet (weekend ended up being busy w/kid and social stuff) and also hasn't been too hot, but keeping all this stuff in mind. Thanks!
