Can I take iron supplements with lexapro?

Anonymous
I am on lexapro (15mg) for depression and anxiety. It's helping, but I still feel tired all the time even after 8+ hours of sleep. I was diagnosed with anemia several years ago before becoming depressed and anxious, took iron pills, then just kind of stopped and haven't used them since at least a year before starting lexapro.

So, is it ok to take the two together?

I would not take iron pills (beyond what is in a multivitamin or, stretching it, prenatal vitamins, which have higher iron) without consulting a doctor. This is not an easy supplement to take as there can be side effects and there is a risk of iron overload. Please consult with your PCP before doing this. I don't think taking it with Lexapro changes this much.

They're just ones I bought at Target.

Still would check with doc too see if you're still anemic.

I'd get a CBC done to check iron and other levels, but yes, if you need iron supplements, it's fine to take both medicatiosn.

I agree with this. Get a simple blood test before starting iron pills. "just from Target" has nothing to do with it.

Yes, it’s fine. My daughter takes them both and is under supervision from numerous doctors

It's not contraindicated, but it's possible the Lexapro is the culprit for your tiredness. You should get your CBC checked at the doctor.
