This renovation plan is stupid.

Isn't Bowser's plan, along with "Alice Deal for all," "Upper NW OOB slots for many'?!

Fine. But if that is the plan, then she has to spend the money to make a school that big fit on the tiny lot. Kids can't play in full parking lots. If she's building so OOB kids have a better school to go to, what message is she sending to those kids by making the building too small to fit them?

It is nuts that they are trying to fit this many kids there with all the building restrictions the site has.

+1 They should rebid the contract at budget, not try to redesign in a week a building that took 18 months to plan. They are creating more problems than they are solving.

OMG. What about the plight of the poor Maryland commuter? Maybe we should consider converting Reno into a parkway for their commuting convenience. Guess what? Kids all across the city eat lunch and snacks in their classrooms. I can understand being disappointed and frustrated with the process but you're acting like spoiled children.

Turns out the new cafeteria will be so small that we'll have to have FOUR lunch periods--hello, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. lunch!--and pre-K and K kids will still have to eat in their classrooms. So animal lovers will be glad to know that our mice will still have a home in the new school.

Pre-K (and PK3, in schools that have it) students in many schools eat in their classrooms, even in schools that have adequate cafeteria facilities. Meals are served "family style" and it's a deliberate choice, though I can't quite remember the rationale.

Which is not to say that this whole situation at Murch isn't ridiculous, but in this part at least, it lines up with things that other schools are doing. The 10 a.m. lunch period, though...that's terrible.

You are missing the point entirely if that is all you are hearing.

Murch was always designed for preK and K to eat separate from the rest of the school. Whoever posted that that was a change is misinformed. The cafeteria isn't big enough for 1st-5th to fit. Nothing to do with ECE (although they did remove the ECE common space that has been placed in other renovations and turned it into the whole-school library because there was no where else to put the library when they had to move the cafeteria to the old gym to put parking where the cafeteria was suppose to be ... but now they can't figure out where a kitchen can fit, so I'm betting there won't be one.). As if these were legos.

Hell of a way to spent $78 Mil. What a train wreck.

I just don't understand why the Mayor can't find a way to make you guys at Murch whole and just build the school as originally planned. Does she want to lose Ward 3 again? Surely she's not going to run unopposed next time

The City has a huge surplus in its reserves this year. The D.C. Council needs to step in with some oversight of Bowser's mistakes and clean up a few of the messes (like Murch) with some of that money.

You are right, the city has the money. But even if the Council stepped in, it would likely too late to fix a modernization that is scheduled to start in June. The Mayor needs to fix this now. If you agree I hope you will call the Mayor's office on Monday and let her know -- especially if you don't have kids at Murch. Calling takes the same amount of time as posting here and has a bigger effect.

The full story of what is happening at Murch is a serious failure of city government on so many levels. It should disturb people no matter where they live in the city.

There is a recently introduced petition encouraging DC to use some of that surplus to finish all school modernizations properly and sooner:

But there are other junkets still to take and crony consultants and contractors to reward....

But Duke Ellington needs more money. DC can't shortchange this jewel for its (and Maryland) students!

Call the mayor, but tell her to fix the boundaries first. Then, go back to the drawing board and come up with a reasonable construction design.
