Good grief you are ignorant.

It is essentially a song about how the government doesn't actually work for the people. And, he is right.

You have roads, running water, libraries, schools, fire protection, police, health standards at restaurants, streetlights?

This is just a small list showing you how important government is and how it is indeed working.

Fire protection failed in Hawaii. Libraries infested with homeless and drugs. Schools aren’t educating. Police can’t keep up with the violence and are often told by govt officials not to. Food poisoning issues increasing in restaurants. I’ll give you running water and streetlights.

I have a feeling you don’t actually patronize your local library branch very often. Please prove me wrong and let us know what library you routinely visit that is “infested”.

I was in West VA (Anthony country!) this weekend. On Saturday I went into the local library. Not a homeless person or a drug in sight…and unfortunately very few children. If you don’t make use of what the government is making available to you, that’s on you, not on an imaginary homeless person.

Oh, mine town is fine because we are conservatives and would not tolerate it. Go into Reston though and it’s a different story.

Reston? Try DC. I visited a Brand new library that reeked of urine around the entrance. I love libraries but sadly I will not be taking my kids to any libraries in a major metro area.

Sounds like you don’t really love libraries. Your poor kids.

I don’t care for the smell of urine and being around homeless individuals who appear to be mentally unstable or on drugs. But you do you babe, Live your best life at the library.

Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses - Proverbs 28:27

That’s nice, but I spend my time and resources helping people who desire to improve their situation. Sadly the mentally ill and drug addicted hobos urinating in the streets do not or cannot. But by all means go ahead and use your resources to assist them.

Can you tell me the difference between the drug addicted hobos you don’t choose to help and the:

“Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground / 'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down.”

So, you overdose on opioids and you deserve help, you have a substance problem near a local library and you are an “infestation”

And the welfare dig sounds like a dog whistle to me.

You are part of the problem, frankly. He doesn't need nor does he want government programs. He wants to be left alone by the government. As do many of us.
He is complaining about the WAY our tax dollars are being spent. No accountability for welfare. Our youth are dying from fentanyl and little to no effort to stop the drugs from coming to our country. Our hard earned money going to foreign countries in the BILLIONS, if not TRILLIONS, and we have people here who have no homes and no food.

He's not been "brainwashed" at all. He has lived it. He has seen the waste of tax money. He speaks for millions.

Nice contradiction.

"He doesn't need or want government programs" -- yet he complains that tax dollars are being spent on foreign aid when "we have people here who have no homes and no food."

There is no contradiction there at all.
He needs no help from "government programs." But, he, no doubt, know many that do. Instead our tax dollars are going, in the TRILLIONS to support foreign governments instead of taking care of our own homeless and poverty ridden citizens.

You just don't get it.

There’s a vast contradiction in saying someone who needs food stamps is “milkin’ welfare” but also complaining about foreign assistance. If the people here in the United States who receive food aid are so undeserving, why do they need more?

That is NOT what he said.

So, what did he say? If people are “milkin’ welfare” why does he want more of it?

You just don't know your facts. We do, in fact, spend trillions on social welfare programs here at home -- and send a fraction of that abroad.

And this song specifically calls out welfare as a waste of money. So I'm not understanding what "government programs" are OK in this worldview?

This song is simply dog whistle BS with no actual philosophy behind it.

My guess: 80% or more of the people who love this song pay nothing in federal income tax.

We don't send trillions of dollars to foreign governments. We spend about $40 billion in aid to foreign governments, with another ~$75 billion to Ukraine. That's about $115 billion, which is $885 billion less than one trillion, never mind multiple trillions: https://concernusa.org/news/foreign-aid-by-country/#:~:text=Foreign%20aid%20by%20country%202022,has%20disbursed%20over%20%2432%20billion.
https://www.cfr.org/article/how-much-aid-has-us-sent-ukraine-here-are-six-charts#:~:text=Since%20the%20war%20began%2C%20the,Economy%2C%20a%20German%20research%20institute.

We do, however, spend several trillions of dollars on our own citizens by funding Medicare, Medicaid, housing assistance, SNAP, SSI, TANF, EITC, etc: https://www.thepolicycircle.org/brief/safety-net-programs/

I'm glad to hear, though, that you think we should be spending more on our social safety net. I trust that you will vote for Democrats who support those expanding and funding those policies. Right?

Most americans prefer democratic policies whether they think they do or don't. Most just have a mental block based upon how they were raised to switch parties.

If you told the bottom 50% of income earners that they will get $1,000/mo from Uncle Sam (but say the republicans wanted to do this) they would all support that -- Ds and Rs.

People are so blinded by the past they can't realize what would benefit their family moving forward.

I don't agree with you at all.
Most of the people I know who received money during the pandemic were outraged that the govt. was sending out money to everyone - whether they needed it or not. It was a waste. Yes - send out funding to those unable to work or earn a living. But, those of us who were still receiving income or pension payments did not need the money.
I think most honest people would object to such a plan.

Need-based assistance is so bureaucratic and complicated it would have taken months to implement and still would have helped some who didn’t need it and would have missed many who did. Everyone you know would have complained even more about that. None of the Covid relief was wasted. It juiced the economy when it needed juicing. People who didn’t need it could spend it in the economy where it would find people who did need it.

New poster and yes, I prefer a person is not convulsing or overdosing in front of me and my child in public and they do it in their basement. Sorry.

I don’t have an opinion on opioid addiction vs crack addiction. Are the young men struggling the singer describes opioid addicts? I think you are reading a lot into what specifically the singer means by the line “the country is kicking them down”.

And we import Millions of low wage workers to keep inflation in check , ie keep wages low for US low wage workers

And we import a million of legal HXXXB workers every year to take jobs from US citizens.

All policies that inflict pain on the US citizen but rich urban elites don’t care. Those damn deplorables. Should have gone to Yale like me

He says young men are putting themselves in the ground. The leading cause of self-inflicted death in the rural poor male he speaks for is opioid overdose.

Who “we”? You think agribusiness— the leading importer of that low wage labor— is located in Democratic cities? Are you confused?

Smithfield and Perdue import workers after telling regulators Americans won’t work for the wages they’re offering. Your problem is with them.
