| Is the end of year DRA level that came home yesterday the level that they are currently working on or the last level that they successfully passed? |
|
It depends. If your child is reading several levels above grade level, they will stop testing at a certain point. The teacher is not allowed to go further than a prescribed point.
If your child is reading close to the end of year benchmark (either just above or below), the DRA level you received is the last level they successfully passed. |
| Not trying to hijack, but my DS is right at the level expected for his grade. Should I pick out books at his level or a little above? He doesn't enjoy reading. |
Thank you. So if my rising 3rd grader received a 38F that means he passed the fiction section, but not the non-fiction? |
If just means he passed the 38 fiction. They may not have tested the non-fiction. |
Just above and audio books at his cognitive level. |
If he dislikes reading, choose books at his level and high interest audio books above his level. |
I would also let him read books below his level if he likes them to make reading fun and interesting. |
NO to the "just above." Go for books that are of interest to him. THAT is the most important thing. You've got to engage him. He needs to be part of the selection. Talk to the librarian and book store clerks who will help him find books on a particular topic. If there is a book that appeals to him, but it's challenging, still get it. You can read it aloud to him. If there's a book on a topic he likes, but it's below his level, that's fine. You want him to enjoy the topic AND be able to access the text. |
Pick out books at his reading level or a little easier. Also, try to find high-interest books even if he's most reading comic books or silly books. |
| I'm the poster that hijacked (sorry). He loves listening to us read all types of chapter and nonfiction books. I will work on having him pick out interesting books at or below his level to try and spark his interest in reading himself. Thanks for the replies. |

DD isn't an avid reader. She reads to herself books that are at her level or a little below. I read books to her that are above her level where we can talk about new vocabulary.
I work at finding quality at her level - she tends to way "under select". |
|
I know I can look this up...how do I find books at my DC's reading level? It there an indicator on the book or a website for titles.
(She is 38 and going into 3rd grade. I suggested Harry Potter which her friends were reading last year in 2nd grade, but she doesn't think it would be interesting.) |
| ^^ DRA level is 38. (DD is only 7.5) |
|
Just look for books that interest her. I wouldn't worry about trying to find books that are exactly that level.
I can't imagine second graders really getting all the nuance out of the Harry Potter books, but oh well. Hopefully they will reread them when they are older. |
