I work in a very male-dominated profession, and an even more male-dominated office.
Today, one of the top dogs came in with two gorgeous women, dressed to the nines in very tight garb. He escorted them into an office, and had one of his friends sit outside the office, watching the proceedings (windowed office). After they came out, he announced loudly to all the guys sitting around him that there was no way he would have taken a meeting with either of them if it weren't for their female attributes (lots of details provided loudly). He also said various derogatory things about their intelligence, etc. I am the only woman sitting in the area so there was a good deal of going on and on about this. There is a lot of questionable behavior in our office, but today really upset me. How much objectifying of women is ok? |
| That would have me at HR or similar in 2 seconds. |
| Not ok. Best solution, find another job. |
| Not okay, but going to be very hard to prove. |
|
If only I had thought to record it with my phone! This guy would be out the door.
Or maybe not, it is a very "boys will be boys" place. |
|
Not okay. Document it well for your later lawsuit when you get fired or not promoted. If this kind of talk is persistent and pervasive, it could constitute a hostile work environment. On its own, it's not much because it doesn't really affect you, but it is evidence of a discriminatory attitude.
|
| It sounds like you work in an '80's financial firm in NYC, like in The Wolf of Wall St. |
| Completely unacceptable. That creates a hostile work environment. |
| That's crazy. Were the women in sales or what? |
| Sounds like they were hookers. Get a new job. Don't bother with HR. |
My thought exactly. Why are you questioning whether or not this is okay, OP? Clearly it is not. |
This is the bullshit of sexism. A woman doing *nothing* wrong now is compelled to bust ass to find a new job because some pig she works with decided to f*ck hookers - at work. |
|
More details please. Want to know if this is just "keep your mouth shut" objectionable, or "plaster it all over the internet" objectionable. |
| Sounds made up. |
| I want to know what the friend was watching? The one he stationed outside the window. What's up with that? |
