Personnel Committee

I am trying to find out if there is any policy regarding the composition of a schools personnel committee. I know the WTU contract addresses it but I cannot pull up the contract online. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Not sure of the specifics of what you are looking for but the Personnel Committee is made up of ET-15 (Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Social Workers Etc) staff members who are dues paying members of the WTU. Those members are selected via a vote of the union members in the school. Additionally administration also sits on the committee.

Are you an employee or a parent...it makes a difference. Parents are not part of the personnel committee and will never-ever be part of such committee. Anything that comes close to participating in such personnel matter is the principal panel and the LSAT but as for getting into the nuances of the hiring of teachers, custodians and aides that's a group formed and assembled by the personnel committee...that reports directly to the Principal.

From the WTU Collective Bargaining Agreement with DCPS (p. 6):

SCHOOL PERSONNEL COMMITTEE. Each School will have a School Personnel Committee that will interview and recommend all candidates for any vacant positions at the school. The Personnel Committee will include: the administrator or his/her designee; the WTU Building Representative or his/her designee; the department head or grade level chairperson (or his/her designee) from the department or grade level affected by the vacancy, or a member of the appropriate non-Teacher employee group (e.g., custodians, paraprofessionals); at least one additional Teacher, but not more than four (4), elected by the WTU chapter at the school; and a parent of a current student mutually selected by both the WTU Building Representative and the Supervisor.

While the initial term of the agreement is from 2007-12, per Article 42.1, it is extended year to year during negotiations for a new agreement. (See also http://www.wtulocal6.org/usr/2015/pdfs/contract-update/WTU%20Contract%20Negotiations%20Frequently%20Asked%20Questions%202.pdf )

That's surprising to me. Any parent here ever been on a committee like this?

To my knowledge we have always had a parent on our school's personnel committee.

I am a parent and I have been on several committees that interviewed candidates...twice for principal searches, once for assistant principal, once for a librarian, and a couple times for other very specific roles.
