I have a 12 year old who would benefit greatly from putting in some regular time in a gym. I would go with him, meaning, we'd join together and work out side by side. Let me be clear here that organized sports are not going to happen, period, although I agree with you in advance that soccer and basketball are wonderful ways to stay fit.
We could also check out the Bethesda or Silver Spring areas if they're close in. Gold's and Crunch said DS is too young. |
| Both Sport and Health and Washington Sports Club allow this. |
Thank you! will call one now and check details |

Also Soul Cycle allows 12 year olds
|
| I think you'll find most gyms allow members at age 12 or 13. Good luck. |
| Will the Y allow it? Also it would enable you to try other things like Rock Climbing, swimming etc. |
| You might want to consider whether a kid that age would really feel comfortable at the gym even if they are there with a parent. |

Fitness First in Bethesda allows 12 yr olds, so long as parent in also a member. I just went through this myself, for my 12yr old DS - so I know for sure they can do it.
Its a no frills gym in that it doesn't have tennis or swimming or a jacuzzi. Otherwise it has everything a person needs to get a good work out. |

As a youth sports coach (paid) and former collegiate athlete in a heavy lifting sport - I don't know what your goals are for the child, but I would consult the trainers there regarding activities for a 12 year old.
I would not do weight training with a child that age - no weights, no machines. I would stick to calisthenics, plyometrics, ab/core work and other body weight exercises. Pull-ups, push-ups, dips, body weight rows, burpees, body weight squats, step-ups, lunges, hyperextensions, planks Box jumps, squat jumps, tuck jumps, split jumps, Plyo-push-ups You can also get some exercises from yoga or lighter cross fit routines (inch worm to grass hopper) |
