Let me get this straight - is it better to DTD before ovulation, or during?

I think I'm ovulating either today or tomorrow based on CM and a darkening OPK. Would the best time to have sex be yesterday, today, or tomorrow (optimally all three, I know, but with a toddler at home we just can't get there)? At the risk of TMI, does ovulation usually take place during the day you have most discharge, or the day after? And before you rush to tell me to read TCOYF -- it's on the way from Amazon.

Before. I used the OvWatch, which gives you a longer "heads up" time than opk's, and if I remember correctly, something like 3 days before was ideal. Maybe check their website.

Yesterday, but today might do it. The idea is to have the sperm ready and waiting when you release the egg, since the egg is only viable for 25 hours.

I have read that the sperm should be present in the fallopian tube at the time of ovulation so you should definitely DTD 1 or 2 days before (both days if possible).

OP again - forgive the really dumb questions, I'm a novice at all this. So does a positive on an OPK (I used the Wonfos which are really hard to read anyway) mean that you ARE ovulating, or you are about to ovulate? We had sex last night and I'm going to jump DH as soon as he's done putting our 2yo to bed, so I guess we have a decent shot?

You usually ovulate 12-48 hours after a positive OPK. So you've definitely got a shot if you do the deed today.

Agree with pp - a positive result on OPK means you will ovulate soon. However, if you're like me and you keep testing, you are likely to get positive day of and day after, too.

The day you get a positive means you will ovulate within 24-48 hours. So if you have sex that day, there will be sperm in there already when the egg comes out. Ideally you would do it for three days in a row so there's tons of fresh sperm in there at all times during the day before and the day after ovulation. We have a toddler too and do it when he goes to sleep. These three days are the most important! Good luck!

Op again. I'm a novice in the sense that we conceived our daughter easily without any of this charting/temping/OPK stuff.

There's been studies on this.

http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/content/14/7/1835.full

Cliff notes is they found the highest probably the day before ovulation, and the next highest probably two days before ovulation. Data is less clear about the day of ovulation. Day after ovulation is too late.

If you have to decide, day before is best. Day of is most likely too late.

Always have sex the day you get a positive OPK. Even better if you can have sex the day before you get a positive OPK, but this requires knowing your cycles really well.

But a positive OPK and ovulation are two different things! OPK is positive before ovulation.

Why is day of ovulation too late (Forgive me, I'm a novice too)? Doesn't it only take a half hour to an hour for the sperm to travel through the Fallopian tube to the egg?

NP here and ugh. I am pretty confident I ovulated this morning. DH fell asleep at 8pm last night and is refusing to have sex during toddler's nap time this afternoon because he's so worn out. I'm never going to have a second child, my husband is so fucking lazy.
