Expectant and Postpartum Moms
Ok, so at 17 weeks, the doctor couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat with his stethoscope 'machine'. He hasn't had a problem before, and we did an ultrasound.....the baby was moving and we could see the heart beating. Has anyone had this happen to them? I'm not just a bit paranoid. Has anyone had a negative outcome when something like this happened?
OP here - I meant "'now' just a bit paranoid...."
Sorry OP, that sounds stressful to deal with. Did the doctor seem concerned? I have had instances where the baby is moving and they can't find the heartbeat very easily but they did eventually get it on the little machine.
I had this happen at 16 weeks and she did a quick ultrasound and the baby was moving all over the place and we could see the heartbeat. I am now 30 weeks and have heard the heartbeat every time I have gone in and I have had a very normal pregnancy. I totally understand your paranoia, but I think all will be well!
If you saw the heartbeat, you are good to go. I know it's scary, but sometimes the baby's position just makes it close to impossible to "hear" the heartbeat. Happened to me several times.
OP here - this all makes me feel a bit better! He didn't seem that concerned, but I never know what is him not wanting to stress me out or what. He made the comment "See, dead babies don't move, and there's the heartbeat...pointing to it on the ultrasound". It wasn't tl later that I thought, "Wait, was he really worried about it?", but then I was already gone from the appointment.....
Yikes, funny sense of humor. I bet he was concerned not to hear the heartbeat but that it was a huge relief to see your little one on the screen doing ok. No doctor wants to discover someone's fetus has passed away
Take care of yourself OP and your little one! |
Oh yes this happened to me and all was well. Although after that I rented a doppler so I could learn to check for the sound of the heartbeat myself. I realize that would only stress some people out, but it made me feel better.
I had that happen around the same time - it was positioning. Once we found it on the U/S I stopped worrying. My baby is 8 weeks this week - all was fine!

This happened to us at 12 weeks. Dr. was totally chill and acted like it happened all the time, sent us to the ultrasound room.
Everything was fine - it is very common in those early weeks as the baby is small and they have to get at the EXACT place the heart is to hear it. |
