Window AC help

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for getting the most out of window units?

Get a newer one. Old ones (5-10 years or more) are much less efficient. Make sure you get a big enough one for each room.
Clean the filter. Newer ones have a filter you can remove and clean in the sink or bathtub. Dry it afterwards and put it back in.
Insulate around it. Make sure hot air from outside isn't seeping into your room. Use duct tape over seams/edge areas.
Insulate the rest of the room. Use the plastic film to add a layer of insulation over windows. Also block sunlight with sun-blocking shades.

Thanks, we have most of that covered. I think we need an additional unit. It's going to be an expensive summer.

Do you own the house? If so, install a ductless mini. Quiet, efficient, and effective.

Who did you go with and roughly how much did it cost you? We are having a HVAC company coming over this afternoon to give us a quote on a quad zone mini split.

No, we're renting. I think part of the problem is that the windows are about 5.5 feet off the ground. They are weird mini windows. All the other windows open left to right.

Would you share what company you used and price range? I'm so tired of the noisy window units.

We used Frosty's. I forgot the cost (a lot) but they are wonderful and utility bills are much less.

All County AC installed ours but I'm not sure of the cost since it was done as part of a larger renovation project.

We had a HVAC company came by yesterday, said it was going to take $18K to install a quad zone split system for us. A second HVAC system with duct through the attic will cost ~ $10K. WHAT?? The prices are outrages. The quad system itself costs $4-5K. The person said its installation. How expensive can it be to install a ductless system and 1 outside condenser unit? Geez

This was the same experience we've had with the mini-splits (very high prices compared to the actual cost of the machines). I was hoping to hear from others that they found cheaper options. I've looked into the DIY, but don't trust myself that much.

Our ac went out. Just got a window unit at costco - they had three sizes at decent prices. We looked into DIY ac replacement and were told if we got a goodman online that it was not covered buy the company warranty. Not worth the savings.

I got a quote for a ductless mini split today. $20K. 4 zones. Is it worth it? I don't know.
