Gifted/Talented letter came home -- questions

Anonymous
The letter came home today saying my 2nd grade child met the criteria for gifted and talented and that she is reading two grades levels above.

But her "InView" percentiles are really low. The target score for 2nd graders is 80th percentile.

My DD got 67, 46, 79, 99 and 55.

How did she get a 99 in verbal reasoning context and a 55 in verbal reasoning words?

What the heck is going on?

Have other parents found weird disparities like this? And more importantly, does it matter?

Yep - absolutely found disparities. This link to sample questions might help you make sense of it. However, it doesn't really matter in the scheme of things - if you want her to go to HGC then she takes a whole 'nother test next year, which has little correlation to how she did on this test.

Also, they are not "really low" - 99 is about 99% of her cohort nationally - and above 80% is usually the cut-off for a gifted determination. As for why the lower grades - she either may not have the aptitude, or she's never been exposed to questions like the ones tested and doesn't know what to do with them, or she was tired or distracted that day, and just filled in bubbles. Who knows?

Do you get the Inview scores sent to you - or did you have to request them?

Your 2nd grader is good with logic.

I thought one needed three scores at or about 80%?

I actually think it's two.

To PP: all 2nd grade parents will get a letter home with the In-view scores, you don't need to request it. Keep in mind this is mostly just a paper definition/check the box thing for school. Don't read too much into it, in any direction.

There are parameters for gifted ID other than the 2 80% inview scores, including above grade level instruction in math and reading as well as a parent survey. So, there are many ways to be defined as gifted in MCPS, and usually about 35-40% of the student population is so identified.

I got DD's InView scores. DD got two in the 90s, and three in the 50s. I am horrified. She will get a punishment from her father and me. Many may disagree but we will not accept 50s.

Isn't it an aptitude test? How can you be upset about that?

The Inview is not a test that she studies for. if you are concerned, instead of punishing her, why not work with her on the areas that she she received the lower scores?

Clearly... It still boggles the mind why Montgomery County claims to be so bright..

In fairness, it's not a particularly funny joke.
