PreK/Headstart for out of state worker

Anonymous
I'm not sure this is even possible but there is a person where I work who lives in West Virginia but works in Maryland (Montgomery county). She has a four year old and would like to do prek/head start. Apparently, something one stated to the person that it might be possible for someone eligible income wise to attend Montgomery County PreK/Headstart from out of state since place of work is here. Has anyone heard of this possibility?

You can pay tuition to attend MCPS schools if they have space (less common these day). But I doubt that applies to PreK since it's only for low income families and very limited. She should call the program to inquire.

I teach Head Start in MCPS. Not possible (unless you cheat, which is probably not what your friend wants to do).

Pre-K is a county-funded program that is only available to county residents who meet the income requirements. Head Start is partially federally funded, but the income eligibility is more strict here. There should be Head Start programs in WVa. If she's not eligible there, given her cost of living, it would probably be unethical for her to attempt to take a spot from a child whose parents have to get by on Montgomery County costs.

Thanks for the info.. FYI, the use of Montgomery county system is more to do with coordinating pickup and drop off due to long commute rather than trying to buck the system.

But she'd have to pay tuition since she doesn't pay taxes in Montgomery County.

Which wouldn't make any sense. If your income is so low that you meet the requirements for Pre-K, you cannot afford tuition.

MCPS Pre-K is half day so it wouldn't really help her anyway. At our school it's 9:00-11:30 or 12:30-3:00. I'm assuming those hours wouldn't work for a person commuting from West Virginia.

Who is taking care of her child now?

Op, I really don't know or talk to her that much. It just came out because I mentioned DD is in Montgomery county schools so she thought I might know. I really didn't but told her I'd try and find out.
