Silt build up in old pipes - how to handle?

Anonymous
Since we moved into our house 2 years ago, we have found that silt - dirt and debris (not lyme) - build up in our faucet heads. We've had to replace some faucets because of it. Does this happen to other people? How do you handle it? What do you do to prevent it destroying your faucets?

TIA!

This is why a plumber once told me that he never drinks tap water. Think of what your water is flowing though. Yes, it's very common, and nothing you can do.
