Do you LinkedIn with parents of classmates?

Anonymous
I'm not a huge LinkedIn user, so was wondering if/how others use it for connecting with the parents of my kids' classmates. Is it appropriate to connect with other working parents with whom I've worked on school/PTO events? I'm looking to increase my WOH network, but don't want to commit any unwritten faux pas.

I only use LinkedIn to connect with my professional network.

I only use Facebook to connect with other people who I like and are actually a friend that I share things with in my real life.

I use email or phone to connect with anyone else.

No, I would NOT appreciate that,

Really, linkedin is so lame anyways, if you are on it, accept all invites. Who knows who you might be able to help, and vice versa. Does it really cost you something?

Depends on how you want to appear to your professional network. If you don't have one, you probably don't care. I don't want my connections to reflect a lot of "CEO and mommy". I'd rather not have that connection at all, as I do know that my clients review my profile and endorsements regularly.

Much like I use Facebook only for people I know and would share personal information with, I don't connect with any and everyone that I come into contact with on LinkedIn. Everyone uses it differently. I only have connections with the people that I actually do business with: coworkers, direct vendor contacts, clients. I prefer to only have people that I know do business the way I do- ethically and well. I work in a small industry and am well known, I have no need to fluff up numbers to make me look well connected. I'd rather be well connected by quality, and anyone reviewing my contacts in my industry could see that.

Again, I know it's not that way for other people and that's fine. Some careers thrive on connecting with any and everyone. I just keep my list lean and mean, rather than filled with people who will only come out of the woodwork when they need something (like a job), but wouldn't contact me at other times. If that's the case, I'm in my company's directory and they can find me there.

If I come to know them well and/or have worked with them on PTO a while. Then it's logical that I'd be happy to introduce them to a connection or vice versa.

Yes I have and received a great job lead because of it.

Linked in is a professional thing. My professional front is not very personal and I use it keep a high level link to a lot people. Anyone who wants that is not a crazy recruiter is welcome. I think of my kids parents friendsd on that level. They are not my 'friends'. Its possible they could be, but doubtful. My facebook is personal. I do not like everyone there. I use linked in for future insurance in case I need a network.

Huh? My kids' friends' parents who are on Linked In have jobs (and many of them in the same profession as me).

Yes, I do. All of them are professionals and it is interesting to see their networks.

+1. Unless we're in the same industry or there is some other reason, I generally don't send requests to parents of my kids' classmates, as I think some people might not want to use LinkedIn that way. However, I always accept requests I receive from parents of classmates.
