ugh....we were out on our patio this afternoon and were eaten alive (This is our first summer in this house).
What do you do to be able to use your outside space? My husband joked tonight that he wants to get some bats...lol. |
We get a spray every 3 weeks. Don't have this issue anymore. |
FYI bats don't do anything for mosquitoes |
We use repellent with DEET. |
We use Cutter backyard bug spray which attaches to your garden hose. I spray around the perimeter and have had excellent mosquito repellent.
Cheaper than mosquito squad. |
We plant a ton of herbs they hate (African blue basil, rosemary, lemon balm -- some times we rub the herb on our skin -- works!) and garlic, set out a fan near us when we sit outside the screen porch (mosquitos don't fly very well against a wind), and if we are having a party, we treat the grass with that dirt they sell that is soaked with essential oils that mosquitoes hate. Does the trick well enough and doesn't poison the kids, pets, or beneficial bugs.
I have also noticed that as we plant more and more native plants in the yard, the bird and insect life has become more varied, and we see fewer and fewer mosquitos every year. |
If you could provide the name of the dirt. Thanks for the useful nontoxic remedies. |
The oils do nothing. The only effective treatment is the stuff mosquito squad uses. Or a giant fan. |
The fans really work well for us- set out a few to circulate and you should be pretty free of mosquitos. Unfortunately, with introduction of the tiger mosquitos in this area, you now get attacked all day round. |
None of that works. I have mosquitoes who live in the herbs. |
Tried it all, then got Mosquito Squad - no more mosquitos. |
Mosquito squad will get rid of the mosquitos but is terrible for your family and the environment. |
We screened our deck. Love it. |
This is not an immediate fix, but scour your yard for all sources of standing water, *especially* the gutters, which often clog with debris and create a nice environment of standing water for them to breed in. Other common places are birdbaths, kids' plastic toys, flower pots, plastic bins and buckets, etc. The advice I have received from the spraying companies is that if you are seeing a lot of mosquitoes in your yard then they are breeding in your yard or very close by -- they do not travel long distances. |
