security system advice

About to move into a house where we'll need a security system for the first time (single family house in close-in NW DC). From my initial research, looks like we'll need to make a choice between wireless vs. non-wireless, but that's about as far as I've gotten. The Savolopoulos family tragedy has me anxious enough to pay extra for video cameras, outside sensors, or whatever else might help keep us safe. Any advice about types of systems, companies, etc, is much appreciated.
