"The Obama administration on Thursday announced what appeared to be one of the largest breaches of federal personnel data, involving at least four million current and former government employees, in an intrusion that federal officials say apparently originated in China." |
| Thanks for posting Jeff. |
| I have Anthem insurance through my employer (state government). When their data breach occurred, I didn't think much of it, just that I should keep an eye on my credit report. Then in May I got the letter from the IRS, and I found out that someone had used my SSN to file a fraudulent tax return. Luckily I had already filed, so they rejected it, but I still had to file a police report, FTC affadavit, etc. This is a long back story to pretty much say: if your personal info has been compromised, be vigilant about checking credit reports, but also watch for any signs that someone is using your info for something besides credit. |
And it seems like they waited over a month to tell the public and the employees. |
| Has anyone received notification that your PII was compromised? I'm curious if OPM just sent an email to your person/work email, or are notifying people by letter (which takes a whole lot longer). |
| Just feds or contractors too? |
I got a general email at work that said emails and letters to those affected would be mailed out June 8-18. So I don't think anyone will know the specifics until thEn. |
| Someone stole my newly opened credit card number in the last week. I'm a Fed. |
|
Well this fits right into DH's plan to blame Obama for everything wrong in the world.
Would contractors' information be susceptible/have been breached too? I've never been a Fed directly, but a consultant, and I had fraudulent charges on my credit card a few weeks ago. |
They are notifying workers via the New York Times. Check back there for next steps. That's where we read that we will have 18 month free credit monitoring. |
| How do we go about getting the free credit monitoring? |
I got an email from my agency telling me that I would be contacted with more information from OPM on this. So waiting.... |
|
Can I just say that most everything about federal employees is not private? You can file a FOIA for resumes, SF50s, transcripts, etc.
Of course you won't get mailing addresses, (but you can get that through google), DOB (google), SS numbers or GPA. |
| Do we know yet what info they got? |
| Oh, the usual, SS# and so on. It will be fun, if you're one of the affected. We should find out in the next week or so. And then there is a monitoring service offered. |
