Hi - Has anyone on here gotten a passport in a day? We have a situation where someone needs to get one - a first one (just became a citizen) before June 24. I called the State call center and they explained the process, but I'd like to have it confirmed by someone who has done it or observed it. We are in DC, so we can go to the agency. We have been told we can't make an appt until the 10th, since that is two weeks until travel. TIA!
I did it once and it was fine. Have to get down there early and stand in line (maybe they make appointments nowadays??)
Don't you have time to do an expedited application if you submit it today?
The website says three weeks for expedited, so I'm not willing to risk it. We are less than three weeks out now.
You have to have documentation of immediate travel and then you can go to the 19th Street Passport Office. The only tricky thing is what will be accepted for proof of citizenship.
He has a naturalization certificate for proof of citizenship, so I assume that would be sufficient. He has not other proof, since he doesn't yet have a passport. That is all he could have at this point. We do have documentation of travel, in that we have our tickets. I'm just nervous - I'd feel better if they'd let him make an appointment now.

I did this recently. Became a US citizen March 10, with a work trip to Canada planned for March 25.
Call the passport office two weeks ahead of your travel time and they will give you an appointment. Double check ahead of time that you have all the documentation you need (including pictures). I was given an appointment for March 24 (the day before my travel) which made me extremely nervous, but I got the passport the same day. I had to go in in the morning and submit my documents, then come back later in the afternoon. |
PP here -- also, I recommend you call the very very first thing in the AM of the day you become eligible to be queued for an appointment.
Thank you so much - this makes me feel better. They said the call center for appointments is open 24 hours, so we will call at 12.01 am the day we can!

I did it a few years ago. It wasn't same day-I think I dropped it off one morning and picked it up 2 days later. I got it the day before we were traveling so it was nerve wracking.
This may have changed, but one weird thing was that when I went through the automated appointment booking thing, it asked if I wanted an afternoon or morning appointment. I said afternoon, and it said the first available date was after I was supposed to travel. I hung up, called back, and chose morning and they had much earlier slots available. Turns out they hardly have any afternoon appointments, it's mostly morning. |
