| Does anyone know anything about this school? |
What are your specific questions? It is an all magnet school that you must lottery into. |
Is it a good school academically? How are the teachers? How do parents feel about the school? |
| I know a teacher at the school who likes it and sends her child there. Another PGCPS employee, who sends her child to Pullen, liked it for the most part. I worried about the academics myself because of the arts focus, but I heard the academics are pretty good. My child had an opportunity to enter in the 5th grade, but she wanted to finish at her elementary school. Now that we have had to deal with a bad fit for a charter school and a neighborhood middle school that is ranked low (and has issues), I regret allowing her to not go to Pullen. Fortunately, our request to transfer to a better middle school was granted. |
Very strong academically wise. |
| Does anyone have any direct experience with this school? We have been disappointed in our experience with PG County school, especially regarding opportunities for advanced students. We were considering home schooling, but our DD was just accepted today off the waitlistto start there next week. I love the arts concept, but wonder about the academics. Anyone? |

I don't have direct experience. But I know a teacher there who regards it highly and has one of her children attending there. I knew a mother whose daughter attends and her review was mixed but mostly positive. However, that had to do with her daughter's special needs. Overall, I haven't heard many complaints.
I turned down a 5th grade spot for my child a couple years back, mainly because she wanted to enjoy her last year at her highly-regarded elementary. But I wish I had taken the slot so that I wouldn't have to worry about middle school. I would take the spot. You can always decide to go private or supplement with tutoring/enrichment as necessary. |
| What's the progress to request to transfer to another middle school. Please share since you had success! I have time but am already thinking about what to do for Middle School |
|
The process for requesting a transfer occurs in the spring. The notice will be posted on the website, along with the list of schools that are under capacity. You can apply online through Schoolmax during the transfer request period.
I was able to obtain a transfer spot at Samuel Ogle Middle School. But my child wanted to stay at her neighborhood school. Considering that transfer students are not provided transportation, that (or aftercare) is an added cost that would eat into money I needed for other things for her. So I kept her where she was, and she is doing fine so far. |
| Thank you, that's good to know. My neighborhood school is Just and heard mixed reviews about it so would like to have options |

It is one of two creative and performing arts school in pg county. The other school is Benjamin Foulois. Depending on where you live within the county, you will be zoned for one or the other. If your child is interested in the arts then it is a fantastic school. It has the same curriculum as PGCPS but students are pulled out of class longer (by 30 mins) to really focus on the arts. They start off exploring all of the arts. In middle school is where they pick their major, so an emphasize on one of the arts. Great concept and it really works. The school has a family atmosphere because students travel together from kindergarten to about 8th grade, for the most part. The teachers become close to the families. Lots of performances inside and outside of the school. It is truly amazing how talented the students are when they leave the school. Just make sure that you student also devotes time outside of school to assist them in mastering their art; so time to practice their instrument, attend afterschool dance company, etc |
