pickup basketball at public courts

non-athletic middle-aged short white guy here, with no basketball skills but would love to just play in a team setting rather than just shooting on my own.
often see the 20 something crowd of tall guys playing what i think is pickup basketball, but how does that exactly work? do you have to know someone to play or just show up at the court? and since my skill level is so subpar, would they tell me to get lost? where do old geezers play, or should i just take up golf (but that's also so much more expensive and doesn't play at night which is part of why basketball works). |

I thinks so. I don't know if there are summer leagues, just ask the department of rec. I have a ton of friends playing for these leagues, men and women.... some leagues are coed. I also don't think it is a big deal to just ask if you can play a pickup game, but make sure you are not going to have a heart attack. |
