Varicose Veins

Anonymous
I have horrible varicose veins (the icky twisty, knotty kind). Can someone recommend a good doctor? I assume they have to be taken care of surgically. Any experiences with that surgery are also appreciated.

I've heard good things about Georgetown Hospital.

how old are you?

43. Does that matter?

Matter for the treatment, I mean. I wasn't trying to sound snarky.

No, no not at all. I was just curious how old you were and if the veins ran in your family. My mother has them at 54 but I don't have them yet at 32.

Not the OP, but reading this thread with interest. I have them also and I just turned 31. In fact, I have a huge one on the back of my thigh. I honestly don't think I can wear shorts now - it is so disgusting looking and you can see the vein traveling all the way down to my calf!

OP here. I think I've had them since my early 30's but they weren't really noticable until I had my second child (at 39). Then, they got worse over the next couple of years. Before, they were just a little thicker and darker. Now they are knotty and gross. It's so depressing that I cannot even stand to look at my legs.

They are painful, too. I'd love to get insurance to pay for it because of the pain, but I'd do it anyway and pay for it myself because I can't stand to look at them.

My doctor, Karen Lawson, who I've been going to since 1995, does laser treatments for veins, hair removal, etc. I highly recommend having it done. I've had both hair removal and am now doing the vein treatments, and I'm thrilled with the results already (after just one treatment). I've been so self conscious about my legs that I wear capris and only capris, but I'm already looking forward to wearing shorts and skirts this summer.

I looked into sclerotherapy (injections), but couldn't stand the idea of the # of injections it would take.

Dr. Lawson's number is 703/465-1916.

Her office is in Arlington at 4001 19th Street North, Suite 216, Falls Church, VA 22203

How do you know if insurance will cover? Look in the policy under what? I'm 41 and mine have been bad for at least 10 years. I did do the vein therapy about 15 years ago and it helped, but with age and having a child I'm back to where it started. I was going to do it a few years back by my OB said to wait until I had my second child. Well, fast forward and I'm unable to have another one so I'd like to get it done. I was told there are some great doctors at Arlington Hospital who do it.

I'm 40 and have had them since I was about 16. They are worse now after carrying my daughter.

I've had sclerotherapy, but the results were only temporary. I'd like to bump this thread to see if anyone has had good and long-lasting results from laser treatments.
