Elementary School-Aged Kids
| What's the age/weight requirements in DC, VA, and MD regarding booster seats for kids?? Thanks!! |
| In Virginia children must be in booster until age 8. |
| 8yrs/80lbs |
| Anyone know for MD and DC? |
| I am not sure the age for MD or DC, but why not keep them in until 8 like Va requires. It is the safest way for children to travel? |
| DC is 8 years/80 pounds. |
| I just saw a billboard this afternoon that says in MD your child has to be 4 feet 9 inches. |
| In Maryland anyone weighing less than 40 lbs must be in a booster seat. Anyone under the age of 6 regardless of weight must be in a booster. |
| 8 years and 80lbs or either/or? Because I have 9 year old that weighs maybe 60lbs on a good day. |
Here's the law in VA. Taken from http://www.vahealth.org/injury/safetyseat/laws.htm Child restraint devices are required for children through the age of seven (until 8th birthday). Safety seats must be properly used and approved by Department of Transportation standards. There is no height or weight requirement associated with this law. The Virginia law is based solely on age. |
It is either, not both. We have a tall, thin 8-YO who weighs around 55-60 lbs but is tall, and we just removed the booster recently. |

In Maryland: http://fha.maryland.gov/ohpetup/kiss/pdf/New_Booster_Law.pdf
"Every child under 8 years old must ride in an appropriate child restraint* unless the child is 4 feet, 9 inches or taller, or weighs more than 65 pounds" In DC: http://mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,a,1237,q,547368,mpdcNav_GID,1549,mpdcNav,|31835|,.asp "Children under 8 years of age must be properly seated in an installed infant, convertible (toddler) or booster child seat, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Booster seats must be used with both lap and shoulder belts." I already posted about Virginia |

Now they are saying age 12...
"Most children will need a booster seat until they have reached 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years old." http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/carseat2011.htm |
| Good Luck trying to get a 12 year old to ride in a booster. |
| NTSB, American Academy of Pediatrics, and every other safety organization I know of says 4'9". DD is around the 50th%ile for height, and hit that mark at her 11th birthday. It wasn't a problem. She knew it wasn't negotiable. |
