What is Lower NW going to do for Middle?

Anonymous
We had a great year in PK4 and looking forward to K. It looks like much of DS's class is going to stick around as well, but I suspect people will start peeling off to charters and DCPS's farther west if we don't get have a valid middle school option. Unlike most of the rest of NW we are shut out of Deal, Hardy and Oyster.

At the moment we're zoned for Cardozo and the only other nearby MS is Walker-Jones. Are there any active parent groups at those schools?

Yes. That's what will happen.

I think generally speaking parents at the MS level are less likely to be super involved in their kid's schools than they are at ES level.

I know a few years back there were some people trying to push for good things at Shaw @ Garnett-Paterson, but I think the closing of the school & move to Cardozo killed it.

So we'll end up being those OOB kids showing up at Hearst, Eaton, and Murch that everyone is always disparaging?

We are zoned for that dump too (Cardozo). Kids from our school go private, to charters or the suburbs. NOBODY goes to the zoned MS.

We dont disparage oob kids at Eaton. The oob kids are part of what makes us who we are.

Not to derail your thread, but we live in Brightwood, I'm not sure what's it called, but we plan on moving or getting an OOB spot at Shepherd.

We will not be attending Whittier or Takoma.

Charters will be the choice for many. DCPS is promising a new North Middle by then but not clear to me when it will be done and who will attend.

Probably worth watching what happens with Brookland Middle as there are same concerns and pressures there. It opens Fall 2015.

OP, have you considered moving further north?

"Those OOB Kids"? Which ones, poor black kids or rich hipster gentrifiers? Exactly which group of people does your snob self dislike?

We just got a spot at Hearst and frankly don't care what people might think. And I don't think Hardy is that tough to get into. There is not going to be a new middle school option before you need it.

BASIS, Latin, or private after Ross ES.

Charter. Charter, charter and charter. No matter what Ward 2 education network tries DCPS does not care about us. And CHPSPO only focuses on the Hill so that leaves mid-city screwed.

Go charter schools! Get in while you can.

If you snag a spot at hearst or eaton now you are set through high school. That's the route I would take.

Same for Hearst. We have found that the people who disparage the OOB kids at our school are not people who actually attend Hearst. It's a great school and we would be happy to have you!
