Anyone ever get an allergic reaction to dissolvable stitches? My DC had them put in after a nasty fall and now there's an itchy rash on arms, legs, torso, and chin area. It's not a whole bunch at the site of the stitches though but from what the emergency doctor said, your body either absorbs them or repels them. I'm thinking a little bit of both.
Anyone have a reaction or heard of such? If so, how long does it take to get out of the blood stream. Any info is appreciated. |
| Could it be from a bandage that was on the area? I never had a reaction to stitches but I am allergic to some adhesives, like in BandAids. |
He didn't wear one. The area was always exposed. |

Yes. I had a skin cancer on my face removed. Was allergic to the dissolvable stitches (they think) and it swelled up, got inflamed, and the area around my eye on that side of my face also got swollen.
Not sure what the alternative would be. And one of them never really dissolved and I had to walk around with a string hanging out of my forehead until the surgeon could snip it off. Yuk. |
| I get a reaction from seristrips. |
Sorry about your skin cancer. How long before your reaction to the stitches wore off? I'm not sure if they dissolved inside the wound although it's closed. |
| It took a couple of weeks before the reaction went down. At the time I asked the surgeon what do do the next time I need stitches (foreseeing more skin cancers in my future ? and I think he said there may be another type he can use. |
| After my c-section, I had a reaction to the dissolvable stitches. The doctor said it was common and cut out what hadn't dissolved, yet. Since your kid has a rash everywhere, is it possible s/he's reacting to the lidocaine? I think a lot of people are allergic to that. I would think that benadryl or zyrtec would help with the itching. |
