| We were planning to put out bagels/cream cheese/tomato slices/cucumber slices/smoked salmon and some watermelon, with coffee for the grown ups and then to do cupcakes toward the end of the party. I'm now realizing that we're butting up against lunch time. Should we plan more food? Less? |

What age? For a party at that time I'd likely expect a rough schedule like this 10-11: activity. 11-11:30/11:45: lunch and cake. 11:45-12: final playtime and farewells.
Definitely lunch for the kiddos. Nice but in no way necessary for the adults. |
| I think a brunch-type buffet is fine for that time period. I've been to parties with a similar spread and it was just right. |
| Kids can have bagels |

My 5yr old usually eats lunch around 11:15 or 11:30 so I wouldn't be thrilled to feed her a cupcake and then hold off on lunch until we are home which would probably be closer to 12:30 or 12:45. Combination probably guarantees a hyper but cranky-hungry kid.
13:45 here again. |
Would bagel with cream cheese and toppings and fruit not be enough for lunch for your kid? Maybe we should add on some carrot sticks and other veggies? |
+1. Parties I've attended (for little people and parents) had some sort of breakfast casserole/quiche, bagels, and fruit (other have thrown in breakfast meats to the offerings as well) ... |
| Maybe add a chicken nugget tray or order some pizza? My 2 yo would need more than a bagel, fruit and cupcake for lunch (well, HE would be thrilled with that, but I'd like him to have some protein). |
What is with all these posts. Just serve your guests a proper meal for crying out loud!! It's not that hard! |
| Brunch food (bagels & lox) is PERFECT for that time period! |
Cheese has protein |
Bagel sandwiches with fruit and veggies are fine for lunch. My kid would be thrilled. |
yes yes I agree. Who needs a bagel and then a cupcake. That is too many carbs. I went to a kid's party where they handed out muffins, and then cupcakes! I mean really? Just order a few pizzas. Like I said in the other thread - a birthday party = pizza and cake. And what kid eats breakfast casseroles? Mine won't touch any sort of casserole. |
Sure, it's not that hard, but a two-hour party will not always fall during a normal meal time. No reason for a full spread mid-afternoon. If you offer a full dinner after guests just had lunch, food will go to waste. And on the other side, parents don't always like having their kids' appetite for dinner ruined. |
It's people trying to be cheap. They want to pick up a couple of things at Costco instead of being hospitable. |
