Tell me about your Lasik experience...

I'm scheduled to have it done in a couple weeks. I'm ready, but I just want a reality check - the good, the bad, the ugly. How did your procedure go? How did you feel after? Any complaints? Would you do it again? Thanks!

I had it 12 years ago. Probably the best medical procedure I've ever had in terms of good results and no pain. I'm a giant wimp, so that means something!

As long you aren't going to a discount place, you'll be so happy you did it.

A friend had it done within the past few months. She's very happy with the results. I think her only complaint were the eye drops she had to use regularly for a while after.

I had it 15 years ago. I just went in for an eye checkup (my first since having the follow ups from the surgery, actually) and the optometrist said my vision is impeccable (still the tiniest bit of astigmatism in one eye, but nothing he would ever consider me getting glasses or contacts for) and that you could not see any scarring - he'd never have known I had it.

I did it at Washington Opthamalogic (??) Associates, I think.

The only pain/uncomfortable part was the device that holds your eyes open. I wasn't prepared for that. They had me take Xanax before the surgery which helps keep things calm. I remember they had music on during the process and it took less than 3 songs.

Afterwards I slept a lot and it took a week or so for my vision to get to 20/20. I did use drops daily for about a year.

Absolutely no regrets whatsoever. So happy I did it - so happy in fact that if one of my eyes went to a 20/40 or 50, I'd get it again.

I wish I had the money to do it many years before I had it done. Painless. Just make sure you take the drops for as long as you are told to and be sure to make your follow up appointments. The only negative is dry eyes in the winter. I use eye drops daily from Nov-April.

Same experience as PPs here. Had surgery about 12 years ago and was a big success. No pain and haven't needed any glasses or contacts since. Still have 20/20 vision. Would definitely do it again.

Read the information here about pupil size. Make sure you are an appropriate candidate. Many people are happy with their results, but there are definitely those who have had serious complications.

It's a funny thing, lasik. My eyesight is not as good (at least not consistently) as it was with glasses or contacts. I think it would be a bit better if I took drops more. But the relief at not having to deal with glasses or contacts more than makes up for it. (I was pretty blind without my glasses on.)

Best decision ever. So happy with the results. I spent my life blind as a bat and I could see perfectly in a day. My two bits of advice are to go to a real doctor who does this often, not a clinic or some place with a discount. It's your eyes. You get one pair. My second advice is to have a supportive person accompany you (to drive you home, and to take you back the next morning when the doctor removes the bandages). I couldn't see and was freaking out. I thought I'd gone blind and my mother kept telling me to be quiet because I was embarrassing her.

Tip: Do not chat up the doctor while he's doing the operation. I did this, and he'd stop each time since he cant' talk to me and focus on what he's doing. In reality, it only takes about 45 seconds per eye. You don't feel a thing, and it's like looking into space while it's being done.

Plan to be driven home then immediately get some sleep (i.e. keep eyes closed) for the rest of the day.

Also -- when using eyedrops, don't get it so close to your eye that they actually touch the eye itself. Made that mistake 2 days after the operation, though luckily things were fine.

How much does it cost

Did it last summer. I don't think it helped my vision. Going for a Checkup soon.

Do not have it done if you have dry eyes.

What happened? You need eye drops often? Or something more serious?

Did it 8 years ago and it was the best thing ever. Still 20/20 and I was nearly legally blind when I had it. Good idea to do it now rather than in the winter, though. The first several weeks I suffered from incredible dryness, and by the end of some days, the halos from lights were so bad I could barely see. Even then, it was so awesome to wake up in the morning being able to see everything that I would have been okay if I'd had to start wearing glasses at night. Everything normalized eventually, though, and I haven't had any problems since.
