Supplementing in Math at Home - Suggestions/Advice?

Anonymous
DD is finishing up 2nd grade in MCPS, and we really feel that the math instruction has been lacking. Plus, she is definitely stagnating (as evidenced by her test scores!). She scores above grade level, but hasn't shown much improvement over the past two years.

I'd really like to implement something at home. We do workbooks, but I'd like something more structured and something to track her progress.

Her teacher recommended iXL, so I was going to go ahead and sign up. But, am looking for any other input. Any other similar programs that you all like? We can't afford Kumon or Mathnasium, and am not really inclined to travel much, so something online or in books would be preferred.

I like Singapore math. You can take their placement tests and figure out where she is at. And then you can buy the next level textbook and workbooks.

I really like the Spectrum workbooks. I've been using them for years as summer brush-up books for my kids. I just bought some other workbooks called "Math Made Easy" for my youngest. They have friendly pages and seem to follow the curriculum he uses in school.

There are also a ton of free printable worksheets online. I like Education.com. A lot of their pages are free to print but some require a membership. I was using it enough for my 3 kids that I went ahead and paid for the membership.

Another vote for Singapore math.

OP here

Thanks! I had read about Singapore Math, but wasn't sure that I could help enough. (I'm not strong in Math, and it seems like it's a whole separate curriculum) I'll look into it more.

I have used the Spectrum workbooks and have liked them also. We've done some Kumon workbooks at home, but there's no 'evaluation' so I thought iXL would give me a better pictures of what DD actually knows and what she needs works on.

Will also check out education.com

My DD hated IXL. It's pretty boring. Also, its not as good for learning but more for reinforcing what has been learned.

try xtramath for learning multiplication and division facts. It's a timed practice to do everyday.

We are also going to try bee star this summer. Don't know how it will go.

I like Singapore Math too. You might consider starting with 1A/1B, to make sure that she has the basics (and you have the basics!). Then move on to 2A/2B and see how that goes. The approach to math in the Common Core standards (which Curriculum 2.0 is aligned to) is actually quite similar to the approach to math in Singapore Math -- a lot of emphasis on number sense and understanding, as opposed to just following the steps in a mathemagical formula to get the right answer.

Thanks for that feedback!

I think my kid would benefit from timed practice, so xtramath might be a good choice.

Sounds like Singapore Math has a strong following!

Aside from worksheets/formal programs, see how you can integrate math into the day-to-day, e.g., board games like Monopoly, measuring for a recipe, discussing baseball stats, etc.

I use Math for the Gifted Student workbooks with my kids. They're more about critical thinking than drilling math facts. My very math oriented kids think the problems are fun.

We are trying TenMarks this summer. It's free right now. There is an assessment and worksheets my kids work on and graded. Kids earned games and avatar.
