11-yo Boy - How Many Hours of Sleep?

Anonymous
11-yo DS who used to be a good sleeper now has a bit difficulty waking up in the morning, and more often than not looked tired when he finally gets out of bed. Yesterday he slept for 12 hours - didn't get up until 10 am. Is this the new normal for him?

An 11 year old needs 10-11 hours of sleep per day.

As kids hit puberty, they need more sleep because their bodies and their brains are growing. Let them sleep. Don't make fun of them or yell at them. They can't help it and it's good for them. They'll eventually even out around 8-9 hours of sleep per night as they get closer to 17-18.

Puberty usually occurs in boys between 12 and 16, so it might not have anything to do with it.

My ds needs about 9-10 hours. If he sleeps less or more than that he is impossible to wake up

I've found that teenagers don't seem to need more sleep, they just shift their habits so they naturally stay up and wake up later. Maybe mine was weird though. He would get up the same time if left alone if he went to bed at 10 pm or past midnight (from what he tells me, way passed midnight).

Ha! I feel like I needed about 10 hours until I was about 20. Maybe I was a late bloomer
