DH is looking for a new job and may have some prospects in Baltimore or Wilmington more so than here. Presumably he would commute via Amtrak every day and hopefully could work on the train to reduce required time in the office. Does anyone do this? How terrible is it, and/or how terrible is it as the DW at home handling the kids alone every night? I'm obviously not a huge fan of the idea, but we're open to considering it for a few years.

| Wilmington would be absurd to do 5 days a week. Balitmore would be ok but still draining. Do you live near an amtrak station? |
|
It's 1:15 on the Acela from Union Station. That's really not crazy for a commute. We used to live in NYC and plenty of people had that kind of commute from Westchester/CT.
But, to my question, can anyone give thoughts having actually done it? |
| It's pretty terrible, train is often delayed. Minimum commute time between Baltimore and DC, with to and fro from stations is about anchor and a half minimum each way. |
An hour and a half, not anchor. I would move rather than attempt the commute. |
| I agree. I have a co-worker who does the commute to and from Baltimore on Marc and it is at least an hour and halt, really closer to two hours, each way. |
| My wife did the Wilmington to NYC every day for a year. It was exhausting and expensive. It also took a real toll on our family life because, although her job was a 9-5, the train ride made it a 6:30-8 on a good day and even worse any time it rained or snowed or anything else caused a delay. She had to get up at 5am. She would arrive home super tired and completely unable to do any chores or help out with anything family-related. I was basically a single parent during the week and on the weekend, we would bicker because she still did not want to spend her down time doing chores. Her work also suffered because she couldn't easily do happy hours or extras without watching the clock. |
