Do hairdressers steal jewelry?

Anonymous
My MIL swears her hairdresser cut her necklace and stole the diamond pendant. When she got home and noticed the broken chain, she went back to the salon and went through the swept up trash looking for the missing diamond but did not find it. Her insurance agent said it happens all the time and believed that her own hair dresser also cut her necklace in an attempt to steal it. I don't wear necklaces and I always remove my earrings before having my hair cut just so they're not in the way. However, I find it hard to believe that this could be a widespread practice without a ton of women noticing their necklaces being cut at the hair salon. Has this happened to anyone here? MIL is in CA.

Never heard of that, never experienced it, and a quick google search doesn't turn up much. I think your MIL's insurance agent was just humoring her/reinforcing the perceived importance of adding riders for jewelry.

How about not wearing diamond jewelry when you get your haircut? I never wear jewelry, there is no point to wearing it, it only gets in the way. Of course your MILs necklace broke. That diamond is long gone, OP.

That this is a widespread practice is highly unlikely, OP. Which is not to say it didn't happen to your MIL - who knows? Is she the clueless kind that a hairdresser would try to take advantage of?

Anyway, next time I hope she doesn't wear anything valuable to go have her hair done.

Yes, I am sure this is a thing.

OP here. She sometimes comes across that way. I do think that wearing expensive jewelry while getting a haircut is irresponsible.

When my DH's grandmother was living in the nursing home, she had jewelery stolen by her hairdresser over the course of 2 years. Not that hairdressers are thieves, but there are unethical people who preys on elderly. This is nothing new.

? W. T. F. ?

1. How would you not notice?
2. Wtf? Really? Paranoid much?

How does a necklace or earrings get in the way of a haircut? What goes on at your salons that I have been missing out on for the past 25 years?

Paranoia can be a warning sign of dementia

It could happen; there are people out there who take advantage of the elderly or the gullible. Don't think most hairstylists would do this, but maybe someone in need of money might be tempted...

If she is wearing really expensive jewelry to get her hair fixed, she should stop doing it. If she is flaunting wealth in any way when dealing with people providing services for her, she should stop doing that as well.

Taking her jewelry with her to the nursing home is asking for it to be stolen. Who. doesn't know this stuff?

Your MIL was careless. End of story.

If the chain was cut or broken (we don't know which), how does that make her careless. She's careless if she leaves it on the counter or in her car, but not if it breaks and falls off her neck.
