My doctor just called me today that both of my ovaries are behind my uterus and that he is not sure if he can retrieval any eggs vaginally. And he might have to go through Trans-Abdominal Egg Retrieval. 2 years ago I did the egg retrieval vaginally and it was fine but this time he thinks that my fibroids have growth bigger which cause the problem. Anyone here gone thru Trans-Abdominal Egg Retrieval? Please share your experience. I am super stressed and sad. I am scared that I can't do any egg retrieval after all those hormone injections.
Thanks ladies. |

I have had two abdominal egg retrievals. During my first IVF, they could access only one ovary vaginally, so they switched the plan for the subsequent cycles.
It's good that your doctor is being proactive. They will probably be able to recover the optimum number of eggs this way. The procedure takes a little longer than the regular retrieval, so you will likely be under sedation longer. I woke up feeling sore and with a ton of needle marks on the abdomen. Otherwise it was not a big deal. And they did manage to access both ovaries this way. |
| Thanks pp 10:38. I am so worry that he can't get to any of them. So far my ovaries are producing good amount of eggs. And I really want this procedure to be successful since we are using a gestational carrier. And I am really greatful to have Dr. Chang as my doctor at Shady Grove. please wish me luck! |
| No personal experience, but good luck, OP! I hear that's what they often do or did overseas; it is less common here. But if your doctor says it's best, and you trust him or her, try to relax and let things happen. Again, best of luck to you! |
10:38 here. Wish you good luck! I am also at SG and they did a great job with my tricky ovaries. |
| I'm not sure if anyone is still on this forum but I'm scheduled for a transabdominal retreival. If you had one...how long did it take to return to basic duties and did you need more medications. Just trying to get an idea of what to expect and how it differs from the normal approach. |
| I am the 10:38 pp. I took two days off work, and had to take Percocet the first day. I did have some soreness and a lot of bloating, but I was up and moving by the second day. It wasn't too different from the first regular retrieval Inhad. |

Hi,
how was the trans abdominal retrieval. can they remove the same amount of eggs as through the vagina? is it more risky? Thanks |
