I bought some mussels on Friday and they've been in the fridge since then. Anyone know if it's still OK to eat them?? They are uncooked.....
If they are dead, then no. They're not ok. This is assuming you bought live ones.
You need to cook mussles right way. I would toss them at this point, don't risk getting sick.

If the mussels are tightly closed or close tightly when you tap on them, they are alive and I *think* they are OK to eat.
I doubt that any are still alive after a weekend in the fridge. |
I'd not take the chance. You need to cook those guys right away.
Mussels are meant to be cooked within a very few hours after purchase-you put them in strainer, run cold water over them, and shake the strainer-the ones that are open will close, meaning they are still alive. The ones that are closed should be discarded as well as any other ones that are open and do not close after shaking. If you bought them on Friday, they should have been cooked on Friday-throw them out-this is one type of food poisoning you don't want to experience. I'm not sure what type of food poisoning one would wish to experience, but this would surely be a bad one. Next time, buy them within one hour of anticipated preparation-get a big pot that has a tight lid. Fill it with white wine or beer, shallots, garlic, onions, butter, and (here's the secret) clam juice. Tomatoes are optional. Steam them until they are open, test one for doneness and make sure you've got a loaf of decent bread on hand for dipping. Enjoy!!!!
Above poster here-a PS-discard any that remain closed after cooking.
So I took everyone' s advice and threw out the mussels! Mmmm, that recipe (with the clam juice secret) is making me think I should go out and buy some more though. Thanks for the recipe. Suddenly I have a craving for a hot, steamy bowl of mussels!
Try it-you'll love it-just used just-bought mussels and don't forget that crusty bread-I love mussels cuz it's a great way to feel like you're eating rich, healthy and gourmet at a reasonable price!
