What do you do when you are traveling with a young toddler in another country, taking lots of taxis with no carseat? I feel a little funny about it but don't know what else to do. I'm sure even if we bring a carseat, the taxi driver will not let us install it, even for the slightly longer drive from the airport... Right?

DH is from another country, and we go to visit his family often with our 13 month old DC. We have not taken a carseat and use public transportation, including taxis. We debated over the carseat issue and in the end left it at home because there would have been no way for us to install and use it on buses and taxis. I did feel a bit uneasy about it, but this is the only way moms and dads with small children travel in DH's home country (meaing without carseats), and we were very selective with the cab drivers we chose.
I'm sure it depends on the place. We took carseats to the UK and had no trouble installing them in taxis the few times we used them. Luckily we usually were on buses, trains, or metro.
We traveled w/ our twins to see family in another country where they do not use car seats. It was not really an option for us to take carseats as it would have been impossible to cart two of them around and we would not have been able to install them in every car we were in anyway. We just tried to minimize car travel as much as possible (took trains mostly) and adopted the attitude "When in Rome..." since no one there uses them, either. All was fine.
We have found that in many of the countries we have traveled to the back seat of the taxi is not even equipped for carseats; no latch system and often times no seat belts.
Depending on the country, there may not even be a place to attach the carseats to. I think it would just be an extra burden to carry one along, and such a slight chance that there would be an accident that would make bringing it worth the effort. I was just traveling in Eastern Europe with my 7-month-old, and it worked out great just holding her in the cars and planes.
What country? If the drive from the airport is long, maybe you can get a cab with a car seat.
We have requested a car with backseat seatbelts for the drive from the airport. In almost any country, a hotel or travel agency can produce a car/van with seatbelts for you (yes, it will cost you more). We brought a carseat but if you don't, I would consider something like the Joey harnass, which attaches to the seatbelts, if there are any. Super light weight. And yes, you might feel silly when you see a family of five on a single motorbike with no helmuts.
I traveled to India & Nepal with my baby who was 8 mo old at the time. We used taxis & no car seats.
I traveled in Russia and Vietnam with my babies and the vehicles were not equipped for car seats.
I was able to arrange seatbelts in the backseat in Vietnam.
